ICI BRINGS BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO CAR REPAIR
WESTLAKE, Ohio, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- ICI Paints, a global business

of Imperial Chemical Industries PLC (NYSE: ICI), has successfully developed the world's first water-based metallic paint for automotive bodywork repairs, called "Aquabase."
It will enable the car repair industry to reduce the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by as much as 72 percent in a typical repair.
Conventional solventborne metallic paints contain up to 85 percent solvent, all of which evaporates into the atmosphere when the paint is sprayed onto the car. It is estimated that more than 100,000 tons of VOCs are emitted by some 70,000 automotive bodywork repair shops across North America every year.
"Aquabase" paint technology was pioneered by ICI and first introduced by the major car manufacturers onto their production lines in 1982. However, completely new technology had to be developed to meet the demands of the automotive refinish industry. A further estimated 100 man-years of effort has resulted in ICI adapting its unique, patented "Microgel" technology to produce this paint which gives a high quality finish without the need for the high temperature baking facilities used on the production line.
Herman Scopes, chief executive officer of ICI Paints, said, "This is the most significant development in paint technology for the car repair industry in 20 years. Extensive testing in Germany and Italy has shown that it is easy to use, provides a cleaner working environment, and requires no major investment in the workshop for new equipment or training, and it will match any car topcoat finish, now, and in the future."
"Aquabase" will go on sale throughout North America and Europe in 1993 and it will help the car repair industry operate within both present and future regulations which control VOC emissions, without sacrificing performance, finish or profitability, ICI Paints said. It will also enable the car repairer to attract business from car drivers with an interest in the environment.
It is recognized that the emissions of VOCs are an environmental hazard because they react in the lower atmosphere with oxides of nitrogen and with sunlight to generate photochemical smog. Environmental pressures on the car repair industry are growing all the time.
In 1991, a number of governments signed the Geneva Protocol to reduce VOC emissions, and draft directives have been prepared affecting a number of countries. In parts of the United States, regulations already exist which enforce reductions in organic solvent emissions from the automotive repair industry.
Imperial Chemical Industries PLC, based in London, is one of the world's leading science-based companies, with manufacturing operations in 40 countries. Annual worldwide sales for the ICI group of companies are about $23 billion. In North America, including the U.S., Canada and Mexico, ICI associated companies employ about 26,000 people and have annual sales of more than $6 billion.
In July, ICI announced it is studying possible demerger that could result in the formation of two separate companies -- ICI PLC and ICI Bioscience. If a proposal to demerge is made by the board of directors and is accepted by the shareholders, ICI Paints will become a business of ICI PLC.
