ICHF SUPPORTS LOW-COST LIFE SAVER
ICHF SUPPORTS LOW-COST LIFE SAVER GLOUCESTER, Mass., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Nutramax Products, Inc.
(NASDAQ: NMPC) announced today the International Child Health Foundation (ICHF), a non-profit agency dedicated to saving lives of children in the United States and abroad with low-cost methods, came out in support of a new low-cost oral electrolyte solution recently launched by NutraMax. The new product, Pediatric Electrolyte, is a sugar-glucose solution, introduced at a cost up to 35 percent lower to consumers than other available products such as Pedialyte(R) and Ricelyte(R).
The lower cost of the new product can help increase the possibility that more families will use oral electrolyte solutions to treat diarrheal illness, a surprisingly common ailment among all age levels in the United States and a growing cause of concern among many health professionals. According to Centers for Disease Control reports, every child under age five will have 1.3 to 2.5 diarrhea attacks every year, resulting in nearly four million visits to a physician and over 220,000 infant hospitalizations every year for an average of 4.2 days, adding approximately $500 million to the nation's preventable annual health care costs. Diarrheal death accounts for 10 percent of all U.S. infant mortality. Pediatric Electrolyte is now available over the counter in drug stores, food stores and mass retail outlets across the U.S. through store brand labels or retail chains including Walgreens, Arbor Drug, Revco, Rite-Aid, Eckerd and others. The new generic Pediatric Electrolyte is expected to be sold in up to 30,000 outlets by the end of the year. "Oral rehydration therapy is a lifesaver throughout the world," said William B. Greenough, M.D., president of ICHF, "and the introduction of a lower-cost alternative pediatric electrolyte solution is a major step to help achieve broader distribution and increase use of oral rehydration solutions in the United States. Families here deserve a choice." NutraMax Products is a leading manufacturer and marketer of consumer health and personal care products for the store brand market. -0- 7/23/92 /CONTACT: Donald E.
