Ice cool Richard Quinn lifted Newmarket's big prize on Riyadian yesterday - but it could so easily all have gone wrong.

Quinn's bid to give Riyadian as easy a comeback as possible came close to backfiring as Willie Carson launched a late challenge on Burooj that failed by just a neck.

"If he'd lost we'd all have been sacked," smiled trainer Paul Cole remembering Richard losing the ride on the same owner's Generous almost four years ago to the day.

Riyadian is now ready for the best again, with the Coronation Cup and King George on the programme, but last year's Oaks winner Moonshell is finished after finishing last.

"She had a bad injury last year and she obviously still feels it, so she will be retired," said Godolphin spokesman Simon Crisford.

Godolphin's return to British racing proved an instant hit when Mick's Love won the Derby trial by a short head with another Epsom entry, Clever Cliche, a disappointing fourth.
