ICE RINK CONSTRUCTION DELAYED AS INVESTORS SOUGHT.

Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

Construction of an ice skating rink that would be the Santa Clarita Valley's first has been delayed while the developer continues to line up investors, but the project is still on track, he said.

The regulation-size ice rink, planned for a vacant 7.9-acre parcel in the 18100 block of Sierra Highway, is expected to cost about $2.5 million, said Bob Griese. ``Right now we're hoping for an October opening,'' he said.

The city Planning Commission approved the project, and in May granted Griese the conditional use permit required for all recreational facilities, said Jennifer Reid, an assistant planner in the city planning division.

Additional financial backing is needed before the project can get under way, Griese said.

The site is a half-mile north of Soledad Canyon Road. ``They don't have a lot of recreation over in that area of Canyon Country and the population is pretty dense, so it was an excellent location,'' Griese said.

Griese, a Santa Clarita asbestos abatement contractor, wants to build a 48,100-square-foot building that would house a 200-foot by 85-foot oval ice rink and a roller rink. The facilities would be open 24 hours a day, catering mainly to league ice hockey teams along with figure skaters and recreational skaters.

Griese said 30 percent of the people who belong to the West Valley Wolves, a 350-member ice hockey league based at Iceoplex in North Hills, live in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Griese played in league ice hockey as a teen-ager and now has two sons who compete in a roller hockey league for in-line skaters. The ice/roller rinks are as much a labor of love as a business move, he said.
