ICE HOCKEY : GAME RHETT AND MATCH AS OLD PAL SINKS EAGLES.

RHETT GORDON came back to haunt his former team-mates last night by firing a late winner for Sheffield Steelers against Scottish Eagles in the Challenge Cup.

The free-scoring Canadian slotted home with less than five minutes left to earn the English side a 3-2 victory at Braehead.

Eagles had already qualified for the semi-finals but they were looking for a morale- boosting result after slumping to the foot of the seven-strong Superleague table.

Steelers stormed ahead through former Fife Flyers forward Mark Dutiaume after three minutes.

Skipper Sean Selmser levelled after 35 minutes but Jason Sessa put the in-form Yorkshiremen back in front.

Selmser, assisted by Glasgow-born defenceman Scott Campbell, tied the bruising battle for the second time but Gordon's winner silenced the 2500 crowd.

In the Scottish League, Camperdown beat Northern Ireland 9-6 at home.
