ICAHN TO AMERICAN: 'IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY'
MT. KISCO, N.Y. April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Responding to the reforming of American Airlines' fare structure, TWA Chairman Carl C. Icahn welcomed the move saying: "It's flattering to see American Airlines following TWA'S example and restoring some sanity to the business of air travel. Ironically, it was only last fall that American's President Bob Crandall criticized TWA for innovating lower Business Saver fares for both domestic and international travel."
"TWA, however, is still priced lower than American in most major markets," said Icahn, "and we are competitive in all others. In addition, we are further lowering fares for business travelers willing to travel through St. Louis. For the next 90 days, Frequent Flight Bonus Program members traveling on TWA through St. Louis will receive double bonus miles. Unlike American, TWA will continue to honor and actively solicit price breaks for corporate contracts, groups, military and other volume buyers."
Other benefits of TWA are: no $25 penalty for changes on business oriented tickets; and advance purchase fares are set for only 14 days v. American's 21 day requirement.
"American Airlines' move shows that TWA is in fact changing the business of business travel," Icahn said, referring to TWA's popular advertising slogan. "We plan to accelerate the trend we began."
