 ARMONK, N.Y., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Kenneth W. Dam, an IBM

(NYSE: IBM) vice president, will retire from IBM on August 31, as previously announced. Dam has been serving since March as president and chief executive officer of the United Way of America as a full-time volunteer. He will return to the academic community in September, when he will become the Max Pam Professor of American and Foreign Law at the University of Chicago Law School.
Dam, a former law professor and provost at the University of Chicago, joined IBM in 1985 after three years as deputy secretary of state in the Reagan administration. Since 1986 he served as IBM vice president, law and external relations, and as a member of IBM's corporate management board.
"Ken Dam's wide-ranging experience in government, diplomatic, academic and business matters has been an asset to our company," said IBM Chairman John F. Akers. "We wish him every success as he moves back to the University of Chicago."
