IBM UNVEILS DISK DRIVES FOR THE OEM MARKET
 WITH BREAKTHROUGH CAPACITY AND RELIABILITY
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM's ADSTAR business unit today announced significant additions to its broad line of disk drives and storage subsystems for the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) market.
The new drives provide a number of industry firsts: the first 2-gigabyte (GB) 3.5-inch disk drive; the first 4-GB 5.25-inch disk drive; and the first 3.5-inch drive using the industry-standard Enhanced Intelligent Peripheral Interface (IPI-2), which allows for complete control of the drive's advanced capabilities.
These products establish new industry records for capacity, performance, and reliability. OEMs can use these products to achieve technology leadership with personal computers, laptops, technical workstations, minicomputers and mainframes.
"We were the first in the industry to announce and ship 1-GB 3.5-inch drives, and we expect to ship more than 200,000 of them this year. Now we are the first to ship 2-GB 3.5-inch drives. Likewise, in 1993 we expect to ship record volumes of 2-GB drives," said Ray AbuZayyad, IBM vice president and general manager of ADSTAR.
 The 0664 Family
ADSTAR's 0664 family of storage products offers the highest capacity and reliability for 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch drives available today. They include:
 - Models M1H and N1H. These new 2-GB 3.5-inch drives take
advantage of ADSTAR's second generation magneto-resistive
(MR) head to provide major performance enhancements over
 earlier products. Best-of-breed access times,
reliability, and small computer system interface (SCSI)
features allow OEMs and system integrators significant
opportunities to enhance their offerings using these
drives. Extremely high performance is supported by means
of a fast and wide SCSI-2 interface which can transfer
data at up to 20 MB per second. A single byte wide SCSI-2
option also is available for systems using 1-byte wide
data transfer. The drives also come with either
 single-ended or differential cable connection
configurations, so customers have the option of increased
immunity to noise during data transmission.
 - Model P1S. This 2-GB 3.5-inch model is the industry's
first disk drive available with an IPI-2 standard
 interface. A widely-used high-performance device-level
interface, IPI-2 allows for complete control of the
drives' advanced features. Availability of the P1S opens
up new design possibilities for system designers using the
IPI-2 interface in high performance subsystems. High
density, industry leading reliability and performance make
this drive the most exciting new offering for IBM users
since the introduction of the first IPI disk drives.
 - Models CSH, DSH, ESH and FSH. These models offer 4-GB in
a 5.25-inch industry standard package. Each contains two
3.5-inch disk drives addressable as a single logical unit.
Data striping across drives, which are accessed in
parallel, provides enhanced throughput in high transaction
(server) environments. At the same time, they offer an
industry-leading media data rate of 10.44 megabytes per
second. This high data rate allows for efficient transfer
of large records, supporting very data-intensive
 applications such as multimedia.
 - These drives are available with a fast and wide SCSI-2
interface to provide extremely high performance. They
also come with either single-ended or differential cable
connection configurations. This performance is offered
in a package which features the lowest power, lowest
electrical current required at startup, and highest
reliability of any drive in this class.
The 0664 family of drives will begin shipping in November. Due to high demand among customers who are evaluating and integrating these drives into their systems, supply will be limited through the first quarter of 1993. Additional availability is expected starting in the second quarter of 1993.
 Additional Announcements
In addition, IBM today announced that the IBM Deskside High Availability Disk Array will now be available for the OEM market. This system is designed to support applications requiring large storage capacities, from 0.8 to 7.0 GB. Its high availability features include data protection, redundant power and concurrent maintenance, which enable the array to continue operating in the event of a single disk drive or single power supply failure. Using Redundant Array of Independent Disks-5 (RAID-5) architecture, it is particularly well suited for systems requiring a high-performance LAN server. RAID is a storage architecture that provides high data reliability.
IBM also is announcing a SCSI-2 interface adapter for its mid-range 3490E OEM tape subsystem.
