IBM TO SELL PC OPTIONS PRODUCTS THROUGH DISTRIBUTORS
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that it will expand the marketing of its Personal System/2(A) (PS/2/A/) options and monitors and Personal System/1(A) (PS/1/A/) options through selected distributors.
The new IBM program is aimed at establishing a greater presence in the aftermarket for options and monitors -- which includes personal computer memory, hard drives, monitors and adapters. Participating distributors will focus their marketing efforts on reselling IBM options and monitors to remarketers who emphasize aftermarket sales to personal computer users seeking to upgrade their personal computers with original IBM products. IBM is currently negotiating with Computerland, Gates/FA, InaCom, Ingram Micro, Intelligent Electronics, Merisel, MicroAge, Management Systems Group (MSG), and Tech Data as initial participating distributors.
Today's announcement follows a similar action announced May 26 in which IBM authorized two distributors -- Ingram Micro and Merisel -- to resell IBM multimedia adapters, displays and related multimedia software to remarketers.
"We believe these actions underscore IBM's commitment to offer IBM- brand products to the millions of IBM and IBM-compatible PC users who want to upgrade their PCs with original IBM parts," said David R. Carlucci, vice president, marketing and channel management for IBM's National Distribution Division.
"From our experience with our connectivity distributor program, we found that many resellers expressed a demand for other original IBM products, including monitors, hard drives and memory," Carlucci added. "These programs extend our existing distribution and improve our opportunity for meeting the needs of more customers."
Participating distributors are responsible for ensuring that remarketers maintain high levels of customer support and satisfaction with these IBM products.
