IBM TO CONTRIBUTE TECHNOLOGIES FOR POWEROPEN ENVIRONMENT, PROVIDE UPWARD COMPATIBILITY FOR AIX/6000 APPLICATIONS

BOSTON, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM), one of seven companies who today announced the formation of the PowerOpen Association, also announced that it intends to provide upward compatibility from its current release of AIX/6000(Note A), version 3.2, to the first release of its PowerOpen compliant version of the operating system.
The PowerOpen Environment merges the PowerPC(A) microprocessor, an application binary interface (ABI), derived from a future release of AIX/6000, and a choice of user environments to allow software developers to write applications which are intended to be able to run unmodified on multiple PowerOpen platforms. The mission of the PowerOpen Association, an independent company, is to establish the PowerOpen Environment as the environment of choice across the industry's leading-edge PowerPC platforms by providing members with high-value services and reducing the time to develop binary compatible applications.
"Today's announcement is a win/win situation for our customers," said Donna Van Fleet, software development director, RISC Systems, for Advanced Workstations and Systems (AWS). "They will be able to protect their current AIX software application investments and have the ability to migrate to an enhanced, broadly accepted environment, the PowerOpen Environment."
IBM hardware and software technologies play a key role in the new environment. The PowerPC microprocessor, a powerful reduced instruction set architecture, forms the hardware component of the PowerOpen Environment. PowerPC, derived from IBM's existing POWER architecture, is under development by IBM and Motorola, and will deliver high performance at very competitive costs to address a wide range of computing needs.
The PowerOpen ABI definition is derived from the standards-based IBM AIX/6000 operating system, and applications for the current version of AIX/6000, version 3.2, are planned to be upwardly compatible with IBM's version of the PowerOpen compliant operating system implementation. There are currently over 6,500 industry-leading software applications now available for the RISC System/6000(A).
In noting the goals of the PowerOpen Association, Lou Bifano, director of OEM and technology licensing for AWS, said, "IBM realizes the importance of open systems, and that's what the PowerOpen Association is all about -- combining proven hardware and software technologies from leading companies to enable software developers to write applications that can run on multiple platforms. We are very pleased to be a founding member."
