IBM STUDENT PENNANT RACE TO HONOR 1,000
AREA STUDENTS AND MENTOR OF THEIR CHOICE
BALTIMORE, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Baltimore Orioles and IBM will host 1,000 area seventh graders at the IBM Student Pennant Race on May 19. The event will start with a picnic at the Pier Six Concert Pavilion for the youngsters, each accompanied by an adult guest, and wind up at Oriole Park at Camden Yards for the Orioles game against the Oakland Athletics.
Students from 28 Baltimore City middle schools were selected by school officials on the basis of marked improvement in their studies and attendance, and their positive approach to daily activities.
The IBM Student Pennant Race is an ongoing program to encourage students to remain in school and make positive contributions to their schools and communities.
The students and their guests, travelling on buses from their respective schools, will arrive at Pier Six between 4 and 5 p.m. When they register for the event, the students will receive backpacks containing painter's caps, buttons, autographed pictures and other items.
The program will begin with "Maryland Sings" and the Western High School Pep Band, and proceed through brief comments by Mayor Kurt Schmoke designating May 19 as Student Pennant Race Day.
Welcoming the students will be local IBM General Manager Buell Duncan III, Orioles General Manager Roland Hemond, State Comptroller Louis Goldstein, Morgan State University President Dr. Earl Richardson, and Baltimore City Schools Superintendent Dr. Walter Amprey, who will recognize the role played by the adult mentors to instill educational values in the students.
The picnic will conclude with a performance by "Maryland Sings" and a drawing to select the student who will throw out the first ball.
At Oriole Park, Cal Ripken Jr., will welcome the students, who will be seated in the upper reserve section.
