IBM RTP RECEIVES FIRST ANNUAL N.C. QUALITY LEADERSHIP AWARD
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- North Carolina Governor James G. Martin will present the IBM RTP Personal Systems(B) manufacturing team with the first annual North Carolina Quality Leadership Award at a banquet November 19.
A press forum will be held on November 20 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in room 220, second floor of the North Carolina State University's McKimmon Center in Raleigh. Forum panelists will include Richard L. Daugherty, vice-president, manufacturing, IBM Entry Systems Division; Braxton Vick, executive vice-president, Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation and Wayne D. Peterson, president, Carolina Telephone.
The North Carolina Quality Leadership Award is the state's equivalent of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and is based on the same criteria. There are categories for large and small manufacturing and for service businesses that are judged to excel. IBM is the first recipient of the award and is the only company to receive this award in 1991.
The 26-year-old manufacturing facility at RTP has produced a wide variety of personal computer and communications equipment. Due to the demonstrated track record of manufacturing quality, efficiency and dependability, all Personal Systems/1(B) and Personal Systems/2(A) manufacturing for the U.S. and Canadian markets takes place at RTP. The manufacturing operations employ approximately 2,100 people and occupy 1.2 million square feet. Products currently manufactured in the plant include Personal Systems computer units, Personal Systems monitors, display monitors and display logic units.
PS/2(A) products are sold by 1,800 business-partner dealers and 800 value-added remarketers. The PS/1(B) is sold by 1,600 department stores and 500 consumer electronics stores in the United States. Over eight million personal computer systems units, monitors and display logic units have been manufactured at the IBM-RTP Personal Systems plant since 1988.
Press tours of IBM's Personal Systems manufacturing plant are available.
