IBM Provides Complete Integrated Solution for Managing Data Storage in a Network.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 4, 1996--IBM today introduced the 3466 Network Storage Manager, the first in a planned family of integrated storage solutions.

The 3466 Network Storage Manager -- a StorageSmart Solution -- is especially useful for Internet and Intranet applications.

It is a self-contained, fully configured hardware and software product for the automated backup, storage management and recovery of mission-critical data for businesses with enterprise-wide client server environments.

This high-performance solution is capable of backing up as much as 40 terabytes (TB) of data from hundreds of servers and desktop systems across networks.

WebShell Offers Remote Access

With the WebShell interface of the IBM Network Storage Manager, customers can use such popular Internet browsers as Netscape Navigator or IBM Web Explorer to backup and restore their files through the public Internet or company Intranets. Individual telecommuters and remote offices can be linked to a company's main storage facility to backup their data without administrator assistance. Alternatively, remote help-desks can support these remote sites if administrative assistance is required.

Network Storage Manager integrates IBM best-of-breed technology -- including high-performance Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) disks, a state-of-the-art Magstar 3590 Tape Drive and award-winning ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) software -- to create an easy-to-use network-attached solution. As such, it requires no separate server or network software, offers simple, non-disruptive installation and manages compressed data capacities of up to 40 TB at a three-to-one ratio.

Supports More Than 30 Different Operating Systems

Offering almost universal compatibility, Network Storage Manager operates seamlessly with major network topologies, popular communications protocols and more than 30 different multi-platform operating systems, including DEC, Microsoft, and Apple. It provides incremental online database backup for Oracle, Sybase, Informix, DB2, Lotus Notes and SAP/R3.

Network Storage Manager provides true disaster recovery for widely distributed data, automatically backing up desktops, workstations and servers. It also helps to simplify the planning, preparation and execution of a disaster recovery plan -- guiding the user through the restoration of data after disaster strikes. In addition, Network Storage Manager protects the storage environment against media loss and disaster by backing up the unit's storage database and backing up server and workstation data to a secondary site.

IBM Responds to Texas Instruments' Business Needs

"With IBM bringing together the best-of-class components, I don't have to evaluate, buy, integrate or maintain the parts," said Ed Gann, product manager, Enterprise Computing, Texas Instruments. "As a result of IBM's responsiveness to my backup requirements, I am able to implement a centrally administered, enterprise-wide solution consisting of thousands of clients running on SUN, HP, Windows NT and OS/2 with our existing staff levels."

"Our goal is to make storage simpler to install, use and manage by building the storage management capability into the box. By preconfiguring the hardware and software, and reducing the complexity of setup and installation, we're able to offer customers the fastest way to get enterprise-wide storage management in a distributed environment," said Nora Denzel, director, Storage Management Software, IBM Storage Systems Division. "We've accomplished this without sacrificing performance. The Network Storage Manager is expected to provide the highest available performance for the client server environment. Now that's smart storage."

The IBM 3466 Network Storage Manager is the first of these integrated storage solutions offered within the StorageSmart family. It is planned for general availability in the fourth quarter of 1996. -0-
