IBM PUBLISHES THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH
 TO MULTIMEDIA DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING
ATLANTA, Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today issued a multimedia "white paper", which describes the requirements for integrating multimedia into the current information systems infrastructure -- the first comprehensive approach to multimedia distributed computing.
The IBM publication is entitled, Multimedia Distributed Computing: IBM's Directions for Multimedia Distributed Systems, and is available from the IBM Multimedia Information Center, 1-800-426-9402 and from your local IBM representative.
The result of this vision will be the ability to deliver all forms of information through natural media to people anytime, anywhere in the distributed enterprise - thus significantly increasing the utilization and value of this information.
To accomplish this, IBM intends to develop a wide range of multimedia solutions -- compliant with emerging international and selected industry multimedia standards -- which include personal workstations, workgroup systems, and enterprise distributed systems. These solutions and standards will enable open distributed multimedia computing.
"To maximize one of the most vital assets in any organization -- information -- it is important that this information be communicated more effectively and efficiently than has ever been possible before," said Michael A. Braun, assistant general manager, IBM Multimedia. "To do this, enterprise-wide distributed multimedia systems will be necessary. Distributed computing will form the next generation of systems that help increase the value of corporate information."
IBM is committed to an evolutionary strategy to allow implementation of multimedia solutions using the existing information systems infrastructure. IBM intends to provide new systems enabled with multimedia, as well as enhancements to the established framework for distributed computing.
To this end, IBM has already announced the first five Ultimedia(A) personal workstations - PS/2(A) M57 SLC, M57 486SLC2, DV M57 486SLC2, M77 486 and M77 486DX2. These Ultimedia systems provide the most natural user interfaces available, easiest integration into existing infrastructures and the highest possible quality.
IBM intends to extend the personal workstations family to include low-cost multimedia player models and multimedia portable models that will be attached to hosts and servers to provide enterprise-wide multimedia services.
Additionally, IBM is innovating in the following areas:
-- Operating system services and presentation services
-- Application tools and application services
 -- Data services
 -- Networking application support, transport
 network and subnetworking
 -- Systems management
 -- Multimedia server solutions
 -- Standards
"Sharing, distributing and collaborating through multimedia will significantly contribute to the improved efficiency, effectiveness and quality of communications across corporations," said Braun. "IBM intends to lead this effort by providing the tools and technology necessary for enterprise-wide distributed multimedia solutions.
