IBM PC COMPANY BROADENS DIRECT RESPONSE EFFORT; INTRODUCES ITS LARGEST MAIL CATALOG TO DATE

SOMERS, N.Y., June 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing its expansion in direct response marketing of personal computers, the IBM Personal Computer Company (NYSE: IBM) today introduced its largest mail catalog to date, with a mailing to more than 1.3 million customers over the next month.
The 80-page, four-color catalog, called the SuperSource Book, offers shoppers more than 800 IBM and non-IBM personal computer products. Non- IBM products will be delivered through a special arrangement with Merisel, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: MSEL), one of the industry's largest distributors. The catalog is the fourth in an ongoing series of catalogs and direct mail from IBM PC Direct.
"We expect this catalog to change the way shoppers view buying direct from IBM through an 800-number," said Larry Deaton, who heads IBM PC Direct. "It is a `store in print'. Its focus is on putting the `personal' in personal computers and is in keeping with the theme that appears throughout our new print advertising campaign. This catalog demonstrates our commitment to our customers and is a major step towards building life-long relationships with them."
Products featured in the IBM catalog include the company's PS/ValuePoint(a) line; ThinkPad(a) notebook computers, including the newly announced 500 and 350 series; software; multimedia products; networking solutions; printers and accessories. In addition, shoppers calling IBM PC Direct's 800-number can choose from among more than 20,000 different custom solutions, with access to more than 2,000 non- IBM peripherals, including modems, CD ROMs, networking options, and software.
"This unique partnership fives IBM PC Direct users access to world- class products from our vast resources," said John Connors, president of Merisel, the world's largest publicly held distributor of microcomputer hardware and software products.
IBM PC Direct was launched in October 1992 as a unit within the IBM PC Company. IBM PC Direct, headquartered in Raleigh, N.C., brings administration, sales and marketing, service and support, and manufacturing under one roof in an effort to provide fast response and enhanced customer service.
A free catalog or product offerings can be ordered directly from IBM by calling toll-free 1-800-IBM-2YOU (1-800-426-2968) Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to midnight and Saturday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Orders are normally shipped from IBM within 48 hours (subject to availability) and are backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.
