Valid/IBM Enter Technology Agreement For MCM
                 and Multi-Layer Ceramic Design
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Valid (NASDAQ: VLID) announced today that IBM Corp.'s Packaging Lab in East Fishkill, N.Y., has selected the Allegro-MCM(TM) design environment as part of its commercial multi-chip module marketing venture.
IBM is offering its MCM technology to outside companies. By incorporating Allegro-MCM in its design methodology, IBM can now offer its customers a commercially available standard electronic design automation (EDA) environment for transferring data from design to manufacture.
Valid and IBM also announced a technology development agreement that will result in Allegro enhancements for the design of multi-layer ceramic designs used in IBM's thermal conduction modules (TCMs). The technology partnership will enable Allegro to handle the highly complex, dense TCM designs that IBM uses extensively, particularly in its core mainframe computer business. By incorporating its TCM design and manufacturing experience within Allegro, IBM will be able to offer its commercial customers an optimized multi-chip modules (MCM) design environment.
"Until now, IBM has used its own internally developed tools almost exclusively. Because its tools have very specific formats, exchanging data from outside the IBM design environment is often difficult," said Shiv Tasker, Valid's director of packaging and interconnect marketing. "By bringing in a widely used system for MCM design, IBM is much better positioned to offer its MCM expertise and foundry service to outside companies."
Valid's sale to IBM followed extensive evaluation of a number of other MCM design environments. "Valid was selected on the strength of its Allegro design environment," said Shakil Ahmed, director, packaging laboratory. "The Allegro system fulfills nearly all of our design requirements and Valid is willing to work with us to expand Allegro for TCM design."
"MCMs are just beginning to gain acceptance in the market," said Tasker. "IBM is renowned for the quality and versatility of their MCMs. The superior technology and experience that IBM brings to the rapidly developing MCM infrastructure combined with the leading Allegro design tools will make it more attracive for system companies to enter the market."
Valid was the first EDA vendor to bring an MCM design tool to market when it introduced Allegro-MCM in mid-1990. Allegro-MCM is an integral part of Valid's complete MCM design environment, which includes design capture and logic simulation. Allegro-MCM provides high-speed layout capabilities, in-process analyses and tightly integrated framework technology. This environment enables engineers to bypass the limits imposed by conventional printed-circuit board (PCB) technology allowing them to obtain the speed, reliability and reduced size required by an increasing number of designs.
IBM's advanced TCM packaging technology offers unparalleled reliability. Originally developed for mainframe computers, TCMs greatly reduce the number of interconnections between packaging levels and reduce the total wiring length, resulting in higher speeds and lower manufacturing costs as well as increased reliability.
Valid is a leading supplier of EDA systems. The company designs, manufactures, markets and supports a full line of EDA solutions based on industry standard hardware, operating systems and networks. Valid products are used to develop electronic systems, including integrated circuits, application specific integrated circuits and PCBs, as well as advanced packaging technologies such as MCMs and hybrids.
