IBM OS/2 2.0 CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY

 SOMERS, N.Y., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM) today announced that its OS/2 (see Note A) 2.0, the advanced personal computer operating system that enables customers to run tens of thousands of DOS, Windows and exclusively developed new applications, is celebrating the first-year anniversary of its introduction.
 In its first year, OS/2 2.0, the world's first Intel-based, 32-bit PC operating system, scored a number of achievements and exceeded its objectives in several areas, including.
 -- More than two million copies shipped;
 -- More than 1,200 32-bit OS/2-specific applications introduced;
 -- 12 international awards from computer trade publications for categories such as Products of the Year and Technical Excellence;
 -- More than 80 agreements with OEM hardware vendors to package OS/2 on their systems;
 -- 250 OS/2 bulletin boards; and
 -- 100 OS/2-specific user groups and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) worldwide.
 "It's been a great 12 months for OS/2," said John Patrick, vice president of sales and marketing, IBM Personal Software Products (PSP) division. "OS/2 is the cornerstone of IBM's desktop and client/server operating system strategy. It's an integral part of IBM's goal to provide users with easy access to information at any time, any where. It enables users to make the most out of their current application software investments and it prepares them to easily adapt to new technologies."
 Patrick said, "Even as we look back on our first-year achievements, we can't help getting excited about the future of OS/2, starting with the upcoming introduction of OS/2 2.1."
 Dozens of Parties Planned
 To celebrate this landmark event, more than 50 OS/2 user groups and SIGs worldwide will hold OS/2 first-birthday parties in March and April.
 The anniversary celebrations kicked off last night on OS/2 2.0's 1992 launch date, March 31, with a party hosted by the Westchester County OS/2 User Group. The celebration is expected to draw more than 100 guests, including IBM Personal Software Products executives and special guest speakers.
 Although the user group anniversary celebrations are not officially sponsored by the company, IBM Personal Software Products plans to deliver special party packages to any user group or other party that requests it.
 Independent software vendors, including Lotus with its 1-2-3 spreadsheet and Ami Pro word processor for OS/2, and Sundial Systems with its Relish desktop time and information organizer, have also pledged their support to the OS/2 2.0 anniversary celebration. These companies plan to provide copies of their OS/2 software applications, or coupons that can be redeemed at a later date, to be given away as door prizes at the OS/2 2.0 birthday parties.
 OS/2 2.0 anniversary celebrations are currently scheduled in: White Plains, N.Y.; Denver; Dallas/Ft. Worth; El Paso, Texas; College Station, Texas; Boston; Knoxville, Tenn.; Philadelphia; Dressier, Pa.; Boca Raton, Fla.; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Miami; Gaithersburg, Md.; Rockville, Md.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; St. Louis; Atlanta; Cleveland; Manassas, Va.; Las Vegas; La Jolla, Calif.; San Francisco; Fresno, Calif.; San Jose, Calif.; Akron, Ohio; Lincoln, Neb.; Deerfield, Ill.; Research Triangle Park, N.C.; and New York City. Outside the United States, parties will be held in England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. More parties are expected to be added during the month of April.
 "We are delighted with the grass-roots support for OS/2 that has developed over the past year," said Patrick. "The large number of first-anniversary celebrations hosted by user groups demonstrates the widespread acceptance of OS/2 2.0 as the software that lets everyone operate at a higher level."
 OS/2 2.0 Advanced Features
 OS/2 2.0 is the award-winning advanced operating system for 32-bit personal computers that protects customers' investments in existing software by enabling them to run tens of thousands of applications originally designed for DOS and Windows, as well as the new applications designed specifically to take advantage of the leading-edge technology in OS/2.
 This robust platform offers superior technology, including an easy-to-use graphical user interface called the Workplace Shell, true preemptive multitasking that allows customers to run multiple software platforms simultaneously, and Crash Protection (A), which guards against one application bringing down the entire system.
