IBM LICENSES ATMEL FPGA TECHNOLOGY

SOMERS, N.Y. and SAN JOSE, Calif., June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Technology Products and Atmel Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: ATML) today announced the signing of a technology licensing agreement that allows IBM Technology Products to use, modify, manufacture and sell Atmel's line of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).
This agreement will allow IBM Technology Products to expand its line of microelectronics products available to both IBM customers and to the merchant semiconductor market. The agreement also enables the two companies to combine Technology Products' silicon, packaging and electronic design automation (EDA) software technologies with Atmel's unique, high-speed FPGA product line to develop advanced FPGA product offerings.
"FPGAs are one of today's fastest growing segments of the semiconductor industry and this agreement will enable IBM Technology Products to accelerate its entry into the market by both marketing Atmel FPGAs and developing products based on Atmel's FPGA technology," said Ken Torino, ASIC product manager for IBM Technology Products. "Atmel's technical excellence and its willingness to work with us as a development partner gives us a significant opportunity going forward into this market."
Atmel's AT6000 FPGAs are used in graphics, image processing, networking, telecommunications and other markets where ultra-high system speed is required. AT6000 devices range in density from 2,000 to 10,000 usable gates. The register-rich, very-high-performance capability makes them ideal for compute-intensive, datapath logic applications. Atmel has developed an enabling technology for implementing adaptive hardware and systems. That capability is called Cache Logic, the ability to dynamically reconfigure in-system without loss of data.
"IBM Technology Products' selection of Atmel's products and technology will provide a powerful boost to acceptance of our high- performance line of FPGAs," said George Perlegos, chief executive officer and president of Atmel. "We look forward to working with IBM to broaden the acceptance of FPGAs as replacements for discrete logic, programmable logic devices and gate arrays."
Atmel recently acquired the technology of Concurrent Logic Inc., including several patents based on the FPGA's cell architecture and interconnect innovations. Atmel's programmable gate arrays enable systems designers to increase system performance, reduce system size, reduce power consumption, shorten product development cycles and get products to market faster.
Headquartered in San Jose, with additional manufacturing facilities in Colorado Springs, Colo., Atmel Corp. designs, develops, manufactures and markets on a worldwide basis a broad line of complex integrated circuits. In addition to several families of nonvolatile programmable memories, the company manufactures programmable logic devices, application-specific devices and various mixed-signal circuits. Atmel is a public company whose shares are listed in the National Market System of NASDAQ under the symbol of ATML.
IBM Technology Products is the world's largest microelectronics business, developing, manufacturing and marketing a wide range of integrated microelectronic technologies. Its products and services range from semiconductor design and fabrication to complete and fully tested functional assemblies. IBM Technology Products has for decades used IBM's world-renowned semiconductor and R&D resources exclusively for IBM's own product families. Now it is offering many of these leadership technologies to the merchant marketplace.
