 IBM INTRODUCES POWERFUL PROCESSOR UPGRADE FOR PS/2 FAMILY:
 486SLC2 AVAILABLE AT LOW INTRODUCTORY PRICE
 WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced a powerful new 486SLC2 microprocessor, enabling customers to nearly quadruple the performance of the popular mid-range Personal System/2(A) Models 56 and 57 with an easy upgrade. The upgrade option features the high-speed IBM 486SLC2 processor, designed and manufactured in IBM's Essex Junction, Vt., semiconductor facility.
 A PS/2(A) powered by the 486SLC2 chip performs up to 20 percent faster than popular 486SX-25MHz systems, without requiring a new system. The 486SLC2 will be packaged similarly to the previously announced PS/2 Cached Processor Option, an upgrade card designed for the Models 56 and 57.
 Customers who purchase a Model 56 SLC or Model 57 SLC on or after May 11, 1992 and before Oct. 1, 1992, will receive the 486SLC2 upgrade for only $259 when it is available in the fourth quarter. (Sale or delivery of the IBM 486SLC2 Processor Upgrade is subject to FCC approval).
 "The 486SLC2 upgrade allows customers to significantly boost system performance without investing in a new system," said Michael R. Coleman, vice president, National Distribution Division.
 The 486SLC2 upgrade can double the performance of IBM's PS/2 Model 56 and 57 386SLC systems, and nearly quadruple the performance of the Model 56 SX and 57 SX systems.
 IBM's 486SLC2 technology means customers can run best-selling programs, such as Excel 3.0(B), up to 20 percent faster than 486SX-25 MHz systems. It is also ideal for Operating System/2(A), which comes pre-loaded on the Models 56 and 57. Customers using a 486SLC2 will be able to run OS/2(A) up to 11 percent faster than a 486SX-20MHz system.
 IBM designed the 486SLC2 with 16 kilobytes (KB) of internal cache and an internal cache controller, which improves performance by accessing data from high speed cache memory rather than system memory, whenever possible. It also features clock doubling technology, which allows the chip to operate internally at twice the external clock speed. In the 20 MHz Models 56 and 57, that means the 486SLC2 will run at 40 MHz internally.
 The 486SLC2 also has power management and an optimized instruction set.
 This is the second SLC processor from IBM, designed, developed and manufactured under a long-standing agreement with Intel.
