IBM INTRODUCES NEW MODELS OF THE PS/VALUEPOINT, ADDING ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY WHILE KEEPING COMPETITIVE PRICES

SOMERS, N.Y., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Just six months after the initial Personal Systems/ValuePoint (See Note A) launch, the IBM PC Company -- North America today expanded the line with new models that deliver faster graphics, true color capability, greater disk capacity and processor upgradeability. In addition, service and support for the PS/ValuePoint is enhanced with today's introduction of the IBM PS/ValuePoint Customer Protection Plan, an extended maintenance offering that allows customers to choose service that best fits their needs.
The new PS/ValuePoints are ideal for customers requiring superior graphic capabilities, as needed for desktop publishing, general business or engineering applications. And also ideal for customers seeking expandability, upgradeability, service and support to protect their investment.
The 40 models announced today offer customers a variety of low-cost computing formats -- SpaceSaver systems, DeskTop systems offering more expandability, or the highly-functional, highly-expandable Mini-Tower.
"Today PS/ValuePoint addresses new market opportunities while maintaining the price/performance the brand is known for," said Angelica P. Horaitis, director of value brands, IBM PC Company -- North America. "We've packaged advanced technology and industry standards together with IBM-quality, and have extended our level of service and support with the IBM PS/ValuePoint Customer Protection Plan -- all at competitive prices with system units starting at $1080."
 Industry Standard Advanced Technology
For improved graphics of up to five times faster than previous models, IBM has integrated VESA (Video Electronic Standards Association) local bus graphics into all new PS/ValuePoint systems, providing true color graphics that produce up to 16 million colors. All systems come standard with 1 megabyte (MB) of video memory, expandable to 2 MB, and base models come standard with 4 or 8 MB of random access memory (RAM), expandable to 64 MB. In addition, all systems have a VESA-VL slot for additional high-performance expandability.
Allowing for easy processor upgradeability, each new PS/ValuePoint is equipped with a zero insertion force (ZIF) connector to support 486 processor upgrades and upgrades to Intels's future OverDrive (See Note B) processor based on Pentium (See Note B) processor technology when available. The ZIF connector provides a perfect fit every time, making processor upgradeability easy while protecting the investment made in the system. In addition, all models support either 128 or 256 kilobytes (KB) of level two (L2) cache for increased processor performance.
 New Model Features
The cost-saving SpaceSaver comes standard with three slots and three bays and can be offered medialess as a local area network (LAN) requester. The new PS/ValuePoint DeskTops come with five slots and five bays. Topping the line with the greatest amount of expandability and flexibility is the PS/ValuePoint Mini-Tower (pending FCC approval); to be used as either a high performance workstation or low-end workgroup file and print server. The Mini-Tower comes with eight slots and six bays.
The new PS/ValuePoint 425SX and 433SX systems are offered as SpaceSavers or DeskTops and can be sold as medialess systems for use in network environments with Token Ring, Ethernet coax or twisted pair. The 425SX systems are based on the 25 megahertz (MHz) 486SX microprocessor, with 120 or 245 million bytes (MB) hard drives. The 433SX systems feature the 33 MHz 486SX microprocessor, with 120 or 245 MB hard drives.
SpaceSavers, DeskTop and Mini-Towers all are included in the PS/ValuePoint 433DX family of systems. These systems feature the 33 MHz 486DX microprocessor, with either 120, 245 or 340 MB hard drives.
At the high end of the line are the PS/ValuePoint 466DX2 systems, featuring the clock-doubling 33/66 MHz 486DX2 microprocessor, with 128 KB L2 cache standard (256 KB L2 cache optional) and increased system performance due to faster hard drives -- 245, 340 or 527 MB. The 527 MB hard drive, available in the Mini-Tower only, provides the fastest speed of the new models, and has an average access time of 9 milliseconds. The 466DX2 systems come in DeskTop and Mini-Tower form.
PS/ValuePoint systems with 4 MB RAM are offered preloaded with IBM DOS 5.02 and Microsoft Windows (See Note B) 3.1. Systems with 8 MB RAM are offered preloaded with OS/2 2.001 (See Note A).
 PS/ValuePoint Displays
The IBM PC Co. today also introduced a new IBM-quality, industry- standard PS/ValuePoint display -- the 6317. This multiscan color display supports non-interlaced, high refresh rates for video graphics array (VGA), and super video graphic array (SVGA), and has megapel resolution, ideal for photorealism and desktop publishing applications. This monitor is ISO (International Organization of Standardization) capable and produces low emissions under materials requirement planning or MRP-II standards.
 Buying Options, Service and Support
PS/ValuePoint systems and monitors are available via IBM Business Partners, authorized dealers and resellers, and through IBM's Direct Response Marketing (DRM), IBM's toll-free direct response ordering, 1-800-IBM-2YOU (1-800-426-2968). IBM will configure and ship PS/ValuePoint systems, monitors, peripherals and options directly to customers.
All PS/ValuePoint systems and monitors come with HelpWare (See Note A), which includes set up, usage and service assistance 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week via phone, bulletin board or automated fax, and one- year on-site service during warranty, 30-day money back guarantee, IBM leasing for businesses and additional services and support.
In addition to the service and support offered through HelpWare, the IBM PC Company -- North America today introduced the IBM PS/ValuePoint Customer Protection Plan. This program offers customers a variety of options to extend maintenance support beyond the one year warranty. Customers can choose not only the length of time for extended service and support, but can choose which components to be covered (both system, including features and options, and monitor, or system including features and options only or monitor only), and can choose how extensive the coverage should be (on-site service within four hours, 24-hours-a- day, seven-days-a-week or next day on-site service, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday).
In a recent survey, the Commitment to Customer Satisfaction Program conducted by Carlson Research Company, 98 percent of PS/ValuePoint purchasers would recommend buying a PS/ValuePoint and or would purchase a PS/ValuePoint again. Ninety-six percent of PS/ValuePoint buyers surveyed are confident that their purchase is a good value for the price.
Today's PS/ValuePoint announcement further enhances the commitment of the IBM PC Company -- North America to meet the needs of customers at competitive prices, and exemplifies the commitment of the PS/ValuePoint brand team to follow an aggressive development cycle and to remain competitive in the industry.
