IBM INTRODUCES IBM 7051 POWER NETWORK DATASERVER FOR TODAY'S CLIENT/SERVER COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM today introduced the IBM 7051 POWER Network Dataserver, a high-performance, high-capacity Network File System (See Note B) (NFS (See Note B) server. It is intended for use by workgroups that require fast performance and large amounts of online data, such as those in technical, engineering, development and manufacturing environments.
The POWER Network Dataserver is designed to deliver over 2000 NFS input/output operations per second (IOPS), approximately three to five times the NFS I/O throughput of typical UNIX (See Note B) servers which support 400-700 NFS IOPS. For customers who rely on high capacity, it is offered with storage of up to 144 gigabytes (GB).
"The new POWER Network Dataserver is particularly valuable in today's distributed client/server computing environment where the ability to share data across the enterprise -- a key to IBM's open systems strategy -- is a top priority for improving productivity," said Jonathan J. Judge, assistant general manager, marketing for ADSTAR, an IBM business unit.
The proven asymmetric multiprocessing architecture used in the POWER Network Dataserver distributes the NFS workload to multiple dedicated specialized processors, each capable of Ethernet, file or storage processing. A fully configured POWER Network Dataserver can support up to 200 Ethernet-attached NFS clients, depending on the NFS workload.
The POWER Network Dataserver is available in two models, a Model 840 and a Model 800. The Model 840, in minimum configuration, includes a rack-mounted RISC System/6000 (See Note A) POWERserver (See Note A) 340 (340R), one Ethernet processor with two Ethernet ports, one file processor, one storage processor, 16 megabytes of cache and 8 GB of disk storage. Its maximum disk storage capacity is 48 GB. AIX/6000 (See Note A) Version 3.2, included along with the server's RISC System/6000, enables it to run network administration and distributed storage management programs available for the RISC System/6000.
The Model 800 is an expansion rack which attaches to the Model 840. It provides additional disk storage capacity of up to 96 GB, giving the POWER Network Dataserver a maximum disk storage capacity of 144 GB.
Storage management capability can be provided by Data Facility Distributed Storage Manager (DFDSM (See Note A)), ADSTAR's client/server storage management program, which can back up and restore data transparently to a mainframe, and by UniTree (See Note A) for AIX/6000, a space management program.
The POWER Network Dataserver is well suited to perform as a central storage server in a LAN environment. It can be used as a platform for LAN management products such as AIX (See Note A) SystemView (See Note A)/NetView(See Note A)/6000, which provides a comprehensive network management solution. It also can provide network connectivity and storage options via Micro Channel(See Note A) attachments.
Multiple storage options to satisfy a broad range of data serving requirements can be accommodated with an expandable number of storage shelves for disk or tape drive modules. Disk drive modules containing either 2 gigabyte (GB) or 2.4 GB disk drives, and tape drive modules containing either 4 millimeter (mm) or 8 mm format tape drives can be intermixed on a storage shelf for maximum flexibility.
Designed to operate in a normal office environment, the POWER Network Dataserver includes software that facilitates system administration.
Two tools, the Virtual Partition Manager and the Performance Monitor, included with the dataserver, help the system administrator monitor network, disk and subsystem utilization and identify and eliminate I/O bottlenecks, assuring reliable, consistent NFS response time for all users on the network.
The POWER Network Dataserver also is the file server of choice for use with the 9076 SP1, also introduced today, the first offering in IBM's Scalable POWERparallel Systems family of RISC-based high- performance computing products.
The 7051 POWER Network Dataserver is priced from $177,600 to $988,700 depending on configuration. Both models will be available April 30, 1993.
