IBM ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR FIBRE CHANNEL SYSTEMS INITIATIVE

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM's Enterprise Systems business today announced its support for the Fibre Channel Systems Initiative. This initiative -- a joint effort of IBM's Advanced Workstation Systems Division and other workstation developers -- will promote Fibre Channel as an interconnection standard for workstations and peripherals.
"We see Fibre Channel as an ideal complement to our Enterprise Systems Connection Architecture," said Nick Donofrio, IBM senior vice president and general manager, Enterprise Systems. "ESCON today provides the reliability of fiber optics plus the advantages of dynamic switching for our customers. In the future, Fibre Channel will provide a high-speed backbone for connecting mainframes, supercomputers, workstations and array disk drives."
ESCON(A) -- a channel architecture for connecting IBM's mainframes to peripherals -- began shipping on ES/9000(A) processors in September 1990. The published protocol also may be used by non-IBM vendors either to connect processors and disk and tape drives or to interconnect processors.
Recognizing the importance of industry standards, Enterprise Systems has actively participated in the development of Fibre Channel standard and plans to support Fibre Channel, along with ESCON, on its future products.
