IBM ENDORSES OPEN SOFTWARE FOUNDATION CERTIFICATION,
 CHALLENGE '93 PROGRAMS
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM today announced its support for the Open Software Foundation's (OSF)(B) program for certifying products that work in an open systems computing environment.
The certification program addresses all technologies from OSF, an independent, non-profit foundation that develops standards-based technology for open systems computing.
The certification process will assure end users and software developers that the compliant products meet the industry standards that enable them to run on a wide range of platforms and architectures.
"IBM supports OSF's certification program to verify that products meet customers' requirements for portability and interoperability in an open systems environment," said Mike Saranga, assistant general manager, Systems Structure & Management, IBM Programming Systems.
Existing certification of two IBM operating systems -- AIX/ESA(A), the OSF/1(B)-based mainframe operating system, and AIX/6000(A), the operating system for the RISC System/6000(A) -- enables them to meet the requirements of the new certification program. It is IBM's goal to obtain certification for all its products conforming to OSF specifications.
IBM today also endorsed OSF's Challenge '93 program, in which vendors will demonstrate their open systems technologies in support of the OSF/1 operating system, Motif(B) graphical user interface and Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) for applications that interoperate on platforms from different computer companies.
"We believe Challenge '93 will clearly demonstrate to customers the reality of open systems," Saranga said.
