IBM COMMUNITY SERVICE FUND CELEBRATES 20TH YEAR
ATLANTA, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- This year marks the 20th

anniversary of a program to encourage IBM employees to volunteer in non-profit community organizations.
Through the IBM Fund for Community Service, employees may receive grants of cash and equipment to support special projects or programs in community organizations.
"Our people are the greatest asset we have to share with our community," said W.T. Smith Jr., vice president and Southern Area general manager for IBM. "This program helps IBM support volunteer projects in which our employees are involved and encourage more volunteer activities."
Grants range from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on the nature of the project and the number of people who will benefit. The grants are made in cash or equipment or both.
"Since the program started in 1972," said Smith, "over 32,000 organizations have received donations which total more than $54 million. Last year alone better than 3,200 agencies received combined cash and equipment grants exceeding $6 million. Almost $1 million of those were in Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, the five states which comprise the Southern Area."
In Georgia last year, grants totaling $259,000 were made for employees to support 143 projects in community organizations. Projects ranged from a remedial reading program for adults in Savannah to purchasing beds for a homeless shelter in Atlanta.
IBM Fund for Community Service donations are in addition to the company's direct corporate support of the United Way and other non-profit agencies in Atlanta and other local communities.
