 IBM BECOMES OFFICIAL NBA SPONSOR
NEW YORK, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM and the National Basketball

Association today announced that IBM has become the official computer of the NBA.
As part of the multi-year agreement with the NBA, IBM will develop special computer systems for use by the league, NBA teams, and the public. IBM also will be a participating sponsor of the NBA Stay in School Program and will sponsor the NBA Coaches Awards program. As an official NBA sponsor, IBM has been granted rights to the use of the NBA logo and all 27 teams logos when used collectively.
Rick Welts, president of NBA Properties, said "We are very pleased to welcome IBM to the NBA family as an official sponsor. Its leadership and innovation have had an enormous impact on many businesses. We are looking forward to IBM's involvement in programs that will enhance the development of the NBA and expose our fans to its products and technology."
The major technical focus of IBM's sponsorship will be to provide computer hardware for use with the league's scoring and statistical systems.
IBM also will develop an interactive multimedia system for use by fans at NBA national events. This multimedia system, which will be displayed in kiosks at the 1992 All-Star Game and at the Basketball Tournament of the Americas, will showcase NBA highlights and information about current and former players, using state-of-the-art computer and videodisc technology developed by IBM.
James C. Reilly, responsible for IBM's marketing communications in the U.S., said "Professional basketball has grown in popularity and is exciting entertainment for the entire family. We are happy to provide information systems that will make the game more enjoyable for spectators, players and coaches."
IBM also has become a participating sponsor of the NBA Stay in School Program, now in its third year. As part of its sponsorship, IBM will support the "NBA All-Star Stay in School JAM," to be telecast on Saturday, Feb. 8 by NBC, TNT, Nickelodeon and the Black Entertainment Network. The NBA and IBM also will be identifying ways to integrate IBM's own educational initiatives with the NBA Stay in School Program.
In addition, IBM will sponsor the NBA Coaches program, including the Coach of the Month and Coach of the Year awards. As part of the Coaches Awards program, IBM will make a donation to a charity chosen by each month's winning coach.
IBM also will provide laptop computers and software for use by NBA head coaches in tracking team and individual player performance.
Speaking on behalf of the NBA Coaches, Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike Dunleavy said, "We welcome IBM's support of the NBA Coaches program. The laptop computers they are providing our coaches with will help move the game of basketball into the 21st century."
