IBM ANNOUNCES TWO LOW-PRICED ENTRY MODEL PS/2s
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM today announced two

new low-priced models of the popular Personal System/2(A) Model 35 SX family, packaged with a Video Graphics Array (VGA) display.
The new PS/2 Model 35 SX-4B1 comes standard with a 40 megabyte (MB) hard drive and the 8512 Color Display at a list price of $1,995. The Model 35 SX-4B2 comes standard with an 80 MB hard drive, the 8511 Color Display, and is listed at $2,235.
The Model 35 SX is IBM's PS/2 small footprint entry to 386SX technology, featuring an AT(A) bus with three expansion slots and two storage bays.
The models offer 2 MB of memory, expandable to 16 MB on the motherboard, an internal 3 1/2-inch, 1.44 MB diskette drive and 16-bit VGA.
The PS/2 Floor Stand Option is available to customers who wish to put the system vertically on the floor.
"The new Model 35 SX offerings are excellent choices for customers looking for a low-cost entry to 386 technology," said Sam M. Inman III, president of IBM's National Distribution Division.
The Model 35 SX gives customers looking for a personal productivity tool or stand-alone business system the flexibility to expand their systems as their needs change. It also is an ideal client on a Local Area Network (LAN) or host-based network at an ideal price point.
 Color Displays
The PS/2 8511 Color Display, which is standard with the Model 35 (4B2), offers a new industrial design and better resolution. The 14- inch display has improved ergonomic features, including a 300-degree swivel base, front brightness and contrast controls and a reduced footprint. The 8511 meets product specifications for Very Low Frequency Magnetic Field (VLMF) and Extremely Low Frequency Magnetic Field (ELMF).
The 8512 Color Display, offered standard with the Model 35 (4B1) is a 14-inch display with an optional tilt/swivel stand allowing for 150-degree swivel.
 HelpWare
All PS/2 products are supported by HelpWare(A), the most comprehensive customer satisfaction offering in the personal computing industry. HelpWare extends IBM's heritage of service and support with four major programs for PS/2 end-users: HelpCenter(A), HelpBuy(A), HelpLearn(A) and HelpWare component programs. The telephone number for HelpCenter, an Atlanta-based customer satisfaction center, is 800-PS2-2227.
 Keyboard Selections
IBM offers a variety of PS/2 keyboards from which a customer can choose: the Space Saving Keyboard (84/85 keys); the Enhanced Keyboard (101/102 keys); and Host Connected Keyboard (122 keys) in up to 11 different languages.
 3270 Host Emulation Features
The Model 35 SX has many host emulation features that, when coupled with DOS 5.0 and IBM's 3270 emulation programs, make it ideal for users migrating from fixed-function terminals to intelligent workstations. The new systems' 16-bit VGA supports the wide screen 132-column data display familiar to terminal users. Also, customers can use the familiar 122-key Host Connected Keyboard with the current IBM 3270 DOS emulation programs.
The Model 35 SX is supported by IBM Operating System/2(A) Version 2.0, OS/2(A) Standard and Extended Editions, Refresh Level 1.30.1, as well as IBM Disk Operating System (DOS) versions 3.3, 4.01 and 5.0.
The specially priced packages are available through IBM Authorized Advanced Product Dealers (APDs).
