IBM ANNOUNCES NINE NEW MODELS, PARALLEL PROCESSING SYSTEM, ENHANCED GRAPHICS, STORAGE FEATURES FOR RISC SYSTEM/6000 FAMILY

 NEW YORK, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced nine new systems and enhanced features for its RISC System/6000(A) family, providing customers with the broadest selection of technical and commercial UNIX(B) based workstations and servers in the industry. These systems support more than 6,500 software applications available for IBM's AIX/6000(A) operating system, enabling users to maximize the power of the RISC System/6000 to meet their business needs.
 The announcement offers several firsts for the RISC System/6000 family of POWERstations and POWERservers. These include:
 -- An entry-level 2D color graphics system priced at $3,995, which is the lowest-priced entry color RISC workstation in the industry;
 -- A new series of specialized desktop graphics workstations that provide a field upgradeable range of high-performance systems for technical professionals such as scientists and engineers;
 -- A new scalable, parallel processing system -- which offers customers the power of eight to 64 RISC System/6000 processors while providing high-performance computing systems at a fraction of the cost; and
 -- A new high-performance, high-capacity Network File System(B) (NFS) server -- developed by IBM's ADSTAR business unit -- designed to improve user productivity by providing faster access to shared data throughout the enterprise.
 Continuing its commitment to provide ever increasing levels of performance for the RISC System/6000 family, IBM also announced more powerful POWERstations and POWERservers, and a new X terminal that delivers industry-leading performance. Enhancements were also made to a number of existing RISC System/6000 POWERstation and POWERserver models.
 Price reductions of 15 percent were announced on memory across the RISC System/6000's most popular memory configurations, and a 27 percent reduction was announced on the 1 GB 3.5-inch disk drive.
 New graphics adapters and a new 19-inch display, all of which comply with Part 3 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9241 standard, were also announced.

"By providing everything from low-cost desktops, to high-performance supercomputers, to specialized products for both technical and commercial applications, we are expanding our leadership role in the open systems arena."
 ANNOUNCEMENT DETAILS
 New Graphics Workstations
 The newly announced RISC System/6000 family members include the POWERstation M20 -- an easy-to-use, low-cost, local area network (LAN)- attached workstation for use in client/server environments. At $3,995 the diskless M20 is the lowest priced 2D color graphics system in the industry. Each M20 comes with a one-to-two user license for AIX/6000 and AIXwindows Environment/6000(A) 2D.
 A new design feature for the M20 incorporates the processor within the display, saving the customer both money and space.
 IBM also introduced three new packaged technical workstations -- the POWERstation 355, 365 and 375. With processors of 42 megahertz (MHz), 50 MHz and 62 MHz respectively, these powerful desktop workstations are designed to give engineers, scientists, researchers and other technical professionals flexible high-performance graphics solutions. The three models also allow the user to choose the processor capability that best meets their application needs.
 New packaging introduced with these systems offers customers the ability to choose one of three different IBM 6091 color displays, the graphics adapter which best meets their needs, and includes a one-to-two user license for AIX/6000 and AIXwindows Environment/6000 2D. All starting at a price of $15,995 for an entry level 355.
 In addition, IBM announced an industry leading X terminal -- the Xstation 150. At over 115,000 Xstones(C), this LAN-attached X terminal delivers performance capability well above that of competitors such as Hewlett-Packard, Tektronix and Digital Equipment Corporation. With its fully cached graphics processor and larger, improved memory system, the Xstation 150 delivers up to six times the performance of the Xstation 130.
 IBM 9076 SP1 Scalable POWERparallel System
 The 9076 SP1, the first offering in IBM's POWERparallel Series of high-performance computing products, provides technical and scientific customers with a scalable, parallel, general-purpose supercomputer. The SP1 was designed to handle numerically-intensive problems such as seismic exploration, fluid dynamics and computational chemistry.
 Combining the power of eight to 64 RISC System/6000 processors with the communications efficiencies of a new high-performance switch, the SP1 boasts a peak performance rate of 8 gigaFLOPS. Based on the powerful RISC System/6000(A) processor, the general-purpose supercomputer provides customers with simultaneous parallel and serial, interactive and batch processing capabilities while achieving outstanding price/performance.
 POWERservers
 IBM also announced five new POWERserver models -- the 360 and 370 desktop systems, the 570 deskside system, and the 970B and 980B rack-mounted systems. With a 50 MHz and 62 MHz processor respectively, the 360 and 370 become the highest performing desktop RISC System/6000 models, offering a performance boost of up to 63 percent over the model 350.
 Additional performance enhancements are achieved by quadrupling the instruction cache buffer to 32 kilobytes (KB) and using the 80 MB/second implementation of the Micro Channel(A) Bus, which was not available in a desktop model until today's new 300 series announcements.
 Performance, price and function are emphasized in the new POWERserver 570 deskside system. Standard features include a 50 MHz processor, 2 gigabytes (GB) of fixed-disk storage and CD-ROM. 2.3 GB or 5 GB 8 millimeter (mm) tape drives are optionally available. With a standard Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) adapter and eight Micro Channel slots, the 570 provides the commercial and technical customer a robust and highly configurable system.
 The POWERserver 970B and 980B offer capacity enhancements and new standard and optional features for IBM's top-of-the-line, rack-mounted systems. Now standard on the 970B and 980B are 128 MB of memory (double the standard memory previously available), 4 GB of disk storage, a 1.44 MB 3.5-inch diskette drive, CD-ROM, 5 GB 8 mm tape drive and battery back-up.
 The 980B also includes two eight-slot Micro Channel I/O boards standard. The 970B includes one eight-slot Micro Channel I/O board standard, with the second board as a selectable option. These provide the 970B and 980B with a maximum storage capacity of 160 GB.
 POWER Network Dataserver
 An industry-leading, high-performance, high-capacity Network File System (NFS) server, this new product is particularly valuable to customers in distributed computing environments where data sharing is a top priority for improving productivity. Available in two models, the POWER Network Dataserver incorporates a RISC System/6000 340R which can provide additional connectivity and storage options, as well as the ability to run network administration and storage management programs.
 Well suited to perform as a central storage server in a LAN environment, a fully-configured Dataserver can support up to 200 NFS clients, depending on NFS workload, and can deliver over 2,000 NFS input/output operations per second (IOPS), approximately three to five times the throughput of most UNIX servers.
 ISO Compliant Graphics Enhancements
 IBM also introduced a number of new graphics adapters and subsystems for the 200, 300 and 500 series systems, and a 19-inch display, all of which comply with Part 3 of the ISO 9241 ergonomic standard. Compliance to this standard provides users with increased viewing comfort, minimized reflections and sharper characters. ISO is a Geneva-based agency created under the auspices of the United Nations that sets quality standards for products and materials which are traded worldwide.
 The new POWER Gt3i graphics adapter is designed for customers with the need for 2D graphics applications such as desktop publishing, mechanical drafting and electrical computer aided design (ECAD).
 The POWER Gt4e is an entry 3D graphics adapter that requires only one POWERstation Micro Channel slot. It is designed for high function 3D applications like mechanical CAD, architectural design and engineering analysis.
 Two new models of the POWER GTO graphics subsystem, the Models 01i and 02i, provide powerful, high-performance graphics and enhanced hardware function.
 IBM's new 6091-19i High Resolution Color Monitor is a 19-inch color display that offers state-of-the-art image quality, clarity and reduced screen "flicker". It allows screen resolution levels of 1024 x 1024 and 1280 x 1024 at a screen refresh rate of 60 Hertz (Hz) and 1280 x 1024 at a screen refresh rate of 77 Hz.
 Additional Product Enhancements
 Additional enhancements have been made to the POWERstation/POWERserver 580, IBM's most powerful deskside system introduced last September. A CD-ROM drive is now standard on the 580, and a 2.3 GB 8 mm tape drive and a 5 GB 8 mm tape drive are available as options.
 Desktop users' requirements for more flexible graphics options and capability are now available on the POWERstation 22W. Customers now have the option of choosing the POWER Gt1b, Gt3i, Gt4e, or the GTO in place of the standard Gt1 adapter, allowing the user to choose the level of graphics support that is right for them. Federal Communications Commission Class B Certification for the POWERserver 220 series and the POWERstation 220 with Gt1b adapter now gives customers the ability to take the power and performance of the RISC System/6000 into the home or dormitory environment.
 The new LS/380L 8 mm Tape Library System offers 270 GB of inexpensive, unattended back-up and online archival storage. The 54 cartridge removable carousel and two high-capacity 8 mm tape drives attach to a RISC System/6000 server or workstation through a SCSI-2 adapter. Using advanced helical scan recording technology, the 8 mm tape cartridge is capable of storing almost 5 GB of formatted data. The tape cartridge offers a 30-year shelf life that makes the system ideal for archival applications.
 Additional features which broaden the capabilities of IBM's graphics offerings were also announced. The new 5086 Graphics Processor Model 01i is compliant with Part 3 of the ISO 9241 ergonomic standard and has 4 MB of base memory, twice that of the previous Model 001. It is a powerful solution for high-performance mainframe graphics and provides an excellent migration path for mainframe 5086 applications moving to the RISC System/6000 environment.
 The new 5086 Ethernet Communication Attachment enables the RISC System/6000 workstation running CATIA Version 3.2.3 or higher to act as an application server for multiple 5086 graphics processors connected via an Ethernet LAN. It also allows the 5086 graphics processor to connect to multiple hosts via an industry standard transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) environment.
 The 6098 Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) feature allows the attachment of the IBM 6098 Channel Control Unit to one FDDI 100 megabit per second LAN. This feature is intended for customers who are installing high speed FDDI backbone networks and wish to support graphics devices using 5086/6090 and TELNET 3270 data streams.
