IBM ANNOUNCES NEW AGGRESSIVELY-PRICED PS/NOTE

 IBM ANNOUNCES NEW AGGRESSIVELY-PRICED PS/NOTE
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM today added another

powerful, aggressively-priced system to its family of PS/note portable computers, introducing the PS/note N45 SL. The new PS/note is designed for customers who are looking for a lightweight portable computer that offers fast processing, a crisp, clear display and long battery life, all at an affordable price.
The PS/note utilizes the advanced power management capabilities of Intel Corporation's 386SL processor, providing customers with approximately three hours of battery life when the system is used continuously or up to eight hours in a typical workday environment, a convenient and extensive power management system that allows users to tailor it to their needs. For example, customers can program the power switch to operate either as a standard on/off switch or as a rest/resume switch. Users can place the system "at rest" for up to 18 days, and when the rest/resume switch is pressed again, users can resume work right where they left off.
The 6.9-pound PS/note comes with a 25 megahertz (MHz) 386SL processor, 64 kilobytes of cache memory for enhanced performance, 2 megabytes (MB) of memory expandable to 8 MB, an 80 MB or 120 MB hard drive, a full-size alphanumeric keyboard, a serial port, a high-speed parallel port, a nickel cadmium battery, video graphics array (VGA) resolution on its 10-inch monochrome display, and a VGA port for running an external monitor. The PS/note also ships with a convenient metal loop on the base of the system allowing it to be secured by cable and padlock, if desired.
"IBM is committed to the portable marketplace," said Scott Bower, director of personal systems marketing, low end. "Today's announcement is an excellent example of that commitment. We plan to compete aggressively on price, function and service."
Customers can take advantage of several options with the new PS/note, including a low-cost data modem. A data modem sends and receives information from one computer to another over a standard telephone line. When on the road, a user can send complete information about a sales call scheduled for the next day. The user can then dial into a public information service, such as Prodigy, check on the weather for the next day, make reservations for the return trip and send an electronic note home with the travel information.
 Software Supported
The PS/note supports Disk Operating System (DOS) 5.0 as well as Operating System/2 (See Note) (OS/2 -- See Note --) Version 2.0. The notebook's large storage capacity and powerful processor make the it an excellent choice for customers who want the advanced capabilities of OS/2 2.0.
 Prices and Availability
The 80 MB version of the PS/note N45 SL, available immediately, is priced at $2,295. The 120 MB version of the PS/note, available July 31 is priced at $2,495.
