IBM ANNOUNCES EASY UPGRADE FOR MODEL 90/95

IBM ANNOUNCES EASY UPGRADE FOR MODEL 90/95
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today

delivered the fastest, most powerful Intel microprocessor to customers, adding the 66 megahertz (MHz) i486 DX2 to its family of processor complex upgrades.
IBM's new PS/2 (A) 486DX2-66 MHz Processor Complex -- available immediately -- lets users of its PS/2 Models 90 and 95 desktop and server systems boost overall performance up to 71 percent, while maintaining software and hardware compatibility with base equipment, features and applications.
"Because of the unique design of our processor complex, IBM is able to offer its customers the latest Intel microprocessors as soon as they become available," said Paul Mugge, vice president development, Entry Systems Division. "Our powerful upgrade card allows customers to respond to increasing computing demands."
The powerful new processor upgrade allows customers to protect their investment in IBM's PS/2 Model 90 and 95 systems. The card replaces the existing complex, which includes the microprocessor, memory controller, memory cache options, and control for system throughput.
In applications where the Models 90 and 95 are used as workstations, the upgrade card is ideal for the high-performance requirements of CAD/CAM, financial modeling, image and presentation graphics, and other compute-intensive applications.
For an additional performance boost, the external PS/2 256-Kilobyte (Kb) Level 2 memory cache option can be added.
The new card features Intel's microprocessor speed-doubler technology, a design that enables the internal frequency of the processor to operate at double the rest of the system. The central- processing unit features an internal memory cache controller, an 8-Kb memory cache, and an integrated, floating-point processor unit.
According to IBM benchmarks, the processor complex increases processing speeds of the older, 33-MHz systems between 17 and 71 percent, depending on system configuration.
The 486DX2-66 upgrade can be installed in PS/2 Model 90 XP 486 and Model 95 XP 486 systems.
U.S. customers can purchase the upgrade from IBM-authorized dealers and re-marketers, as well as direct from IBM.
For installation information and technical guidance, customers can call on IBM's Systems Support Center in Dallas.
Customers can purchase the new card to upgrade systems from 486SX-20 MHz for $3,000, from 486SX-25 MHz for $2,500, from 486DX-33 MHz for $2,170, and from 486DX2-50 MHz for $1,670.
