IBM ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF ACTIONMEDIA II ENHANCEMENTS

IBM ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF ACTIONMEDIA II ENHANCEMENTS
ATLANTA, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM Corporation (NYSE: IBM) today

made several announcements regarding its ActionMedia II technology, including: the availability of enhancements to its Personal System/2 (see Note A) (PS/2(A)) ActionMedia(Note B) II adapters; two upgrade kits for existing users of ActionMedia II; an ISA-bus card; and a new ActionMedia II Developer's Toolkit.
ActionMedia II is part of IBM's Ultimedia(A) family of products that blend state-of-the-art technologies into a set of products that deliver the ultimate in multimedia solutions.
The enhancements introduced today extend the availability of ActionMedia II technology to users of different operating systems and increase application possibilities.
With these enhancements, ActionMedia II, which had previously been for use only with Operating System/2(A) (OS/2(A)) 1.3, is now available for use with OS/2 2.0 and Windows 3.1. The enhancements support Audio Video Kernel (AVK) Version 1.1, an enhanced programming interface.
The ActionMedia II Developers Toolkit version 1.1, which supports each of the operating systems, is also being introduced, and a no-charge upgrade kit for users of version 1.0 will also be available.
In addition to the microchannel version of ActionMedia II, an ISA-bus card is available for use with the AVK 1.1.
For present owners of ActionMedia II, a no-charge upgrade kit, which includes AVK 1.1 for use with OS/2 1.3 and Windows 3.1, is available. A second upgrade kit for use with OS/2 2.0 and Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 (MMPM/2) will be available in the fall.
ActionMedia II is an all-digital multimedia solution providing both capture and display of high quality motion video, audio and still images in a single-slot implementation. It enables digital multimedia applications to be created in real time, stored on a hard file and transmitted over existing networks.
The ActionMedia II adapters are based on DVI(B) (Digital Video Interactive) technology. This technology, which is developed jointly by IBM and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), allows the user to capture and digitize still images, sound and full-motion video. Once captured, the image can be networked, stored and retrieved for playback. With IBM PS/2 ActionMedia II, DVI technology is now available to the general marketplace in a cost- effective manner.
ActionMedia II received the "Best of Show" and "Best Multimedia Product" awards at the Comdex trade show in October 1991 and also won the CD ROM Professional "Hardware Development Product of the Year" for 1992.
