WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. and LARKSPUR, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM

(NYSE: IBM) and SYNON(B) Corp. today announced that IBM will acquire an equity position in SYNON, a worldwide supplier of application development software for midrange computer systems.
SYNON continues as a member of IBM's International Alliance for AD/Cycle(A) - IBM's framework to speed and simplify the development of business applications. Development and worldwide marketing agreements between the two companies also will continue.
SYNON develops, markets and supports an array of AS/400(A) software products designed to speed application development, re-engineer existing applications, improve code quality and simplify software maintenance.
Since 1989, IBM and SYNON have been marketing several of SYNON's products including SYNON/2E, the AD/Cycle application generator on the AS/400(A). Among the other products the two companies market are SYNON/CSG(B), which generates client-server applications that run jointly on the OS/400(A) and OS/2(A) operating systems, and SYNON/CEF(B) and SYNON AD/Interface(B), which assist in the migration of applications between different hardware platforms.
"IBM and SYNON have enjoyed a successful relationship in providing tools that meet customers' needs in the midrange environment," said Earl F. Wheeler, IBM senior vice president and general manager, programming systems. "Today, we're strengthening that relationship to pursue opportunities that are emerging in the requirements of our customers."
"SYNON is very pleased that IBM has chosen to invest in our future," said Christopher Herron, president, SYNON Corp. "We are as committed as ever to AD/Cycle and are happy to assist IBM in the completion of SYNON's and IBM's vision for inter-tool communication within AD/Cycle."
An IBM executive will have a seat on SYNON's board of directors. SYNON's worldwide headquarters is in Larkspur, Calif.
