IBM AND QUOTRON ANNOUNCE EXPANDED, ENHANCED RELATIONSHIP; IBM TO PROVIDE NEW PLATFORM, INSTALLATION, CUSTOMER SUPPORT SERVICE FOR QUOTRON SYSTEMS
NEW YORK, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Quotron Systems, Inc. today announced an expanded relationship that will provide Quotron's U.S. retail brokerage customers with the latest in advanced computer technology and enhanced levels of service and support.
Under the terms of the 5-year agreement, Quotron will migrate its financial information services, including the Quotron Advantage Services (QAS)(note), and applications software from its proprietary computer system to IBM's RISC System\6000(note) hardware. A new Quotron Support Center in Uniondale, N.Y., managed and staffed by IBM will provide customer service, installation, and support operations. IBM also will manage Quotron's nationwide communications network.
With IBM's management of its nationwide communications network, Quotron said it expects immediate cost-savings and increased reliability for its customers.
Quotron Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Citicorp, is a leading global provider of financial information and trading systems. The company delivers on-line, real-time equities, options, and commodities quotes for more than 120,000 investment instruments from 60 exchanges worldwide; foreign exchange and fixed income rate data; news; research; analytics; real-time color charting; networking services; and broker productivity applications.
"In the brokerage business, timely availability of essential information is critical to our customers' success," said Thomas J. Cirillo, Quotron's president and chief executive officer.
"To meet this need, Quotron is dedicated to providing superior service and support as well as high-performance, highly reliable computing systems. Our new partnership with IBM will enable us to enhance both these areas in a cost-effective manner."
Advanced online information systems will help IBM's technical staff at the Quotron Support Center resolve customer problems with a single phone call. The center will manage each problem until it is resolved, including dispatch of either an IBM or third-party customer support representative if a service call is required. In the case of Quotron 800(note) or Quotron 1000(note) systems, technicians from Phoenix Technologies, Inc. will continue to be dispatched.
These new service and support functions will be rolled out to customer sites gradually, with full operation scheduled by mid-1992.
"The service and support arrangement is unique in this industry and draws on IBM's strengths as a provider of innovative customer service and support offerings," said IBM's Sema Marks, Quotron account executive. "This approach to customized solutions reflects IBM's commitment to meeting our customers' needs."
Selection of the RISC System/6000 reflects Quotron's stated objective of providing industry-standard platforms. It is the first in a series of industry-standard platforms to be offered by Quotron. The company has already begun to migrate its financial and network services from its proprietary computer systems to IBM's RISC System/6000 servers which run AIX(note), IBM's version of the UNIX(note) operating system. Rollout of this new platform will begin in early 1992. Currently, Quotron provides -- and will continue to support -- financial information and network services on its proprietary Quotron 800 and Quotron 1000 computer servers, which run a version of the UNIX operating system.
At the desktop level, Quotron's new offering will use IBM Personal System/2(note) computers (or compatible 386 workstations) running Microsoft Windows(note). All of Quotron's services, including the Quotron Advantage Services, will be delivered in the Windows environment, allowing users to incorporate dynamic data into both Quotron and third-party applications.
The offering also will be compatible with most installed Local Area Networks.
Through its subsidiary, Securities Industry Software Corporation (SIS), Quotron offers flexible, real-time integrated services for accounting, order management, and other brokerage operations. The Quotron Trading Support System (TSS)(note) provides an integrated software and hardware solution for the trading environment. TSS processes data and news feeds from multiple vendors; reliably distributes information to traders in customizable formats; runs on industry-standard hardware and software; and displays information on a variety of UNIX workstations.
To use Quotron's services, customers install a server and connect personal computers or terminals to them, creating "brother workstations." Information is fed to the server by Quotron's nationwide network and displayed on the individual user's desktop monitor. More than 60,000 terminals are connected to the Quotron network in the United States.
