IBM AND MOTOROLA ANNOUNCE VENDOR SUPPORT TOOLSET CATALOG FOR POWERPC 601 MICROPROCESSOR

AUSTIN, Texas, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) Advanced Workstations and Systems (AWS), IBM Technology Products, and Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) RISC Microprocessor Division today introduced the PowerPC(tm) Tools Catalog. This Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) catalog provides hardware and software developers with a comprehensive list of quality tools and products for creating PowerPC-based applications and systems.
The PowerPC Tools Catalog features the offerings of more than 20 of the industry's most innovative hardware and software vendors, including: Absoft Corporation, Alsys, Biomation, Cadence Design Systems, CETIA, Cygnus Support, Diab Data, Inc., Echo Logic, Hewlett-Packard Company, Language Systems Corporation, Logic Modeling Corporation, Mentor Graphics, MicroAPL, Ltd., Oasys, Ready Systems Corporation, Sierra Software Innovations, Tektronix, Inc., YARC Systems Corporation, as well as IBM and Motorola.
Tools from these vendors include: optimizing compilers, debuggers, logic analyzers, real-time operating systems, porting guides, architectural simulators, software compilers and development platforms.
"This wide range of tools will ensure that PowerPC customers will minimize their new product development time," said Phil Pompa, director of marketing for Motorola's RISC Microprocessor Division. "This industry endorsement reflects both Motorola's and IBM's continued effort to build mutually beneficial relationships with our third party vendors."
"The range of companies and products in this catalog highlight the substantial market momentum behind the PowerPC 601 microprocessor," said IBM's Lou Bifano, AWS Director of OEM and Technology licensing in Austin, Texas. "The success of the PowerPC will be measured by the number of its adopters, and the availability of these tools from a committed group of vendors should help further the adoption process."
IBM AWS offerings in the catalog include two of the major components of the PowerOpen Environment -- the PowerPC 601 microprocessor hardware and AIX/6000 operating system, the reference platform from which the PowerOpen Application Binary Interface (ABI) is derived. Also included are systems development and integration tools like the AIX Software Development Environment/6000 (SDE/6000), which gives customers a wide complement of tools to address every key phase of the software development cycle -- from a task-oriented, rather than a tool-oriented approach.
IBM Technology Products is the manufacturer of the PowerPC 601 microprocessor. IBM and Motorola each will market the chip.
Motorola has several offerings in the catalog, including the PowerPC 601 microprocessor, as well as four new software support packages for the PowerPC 601 -- the Software Development Package (SDP); the C and FORTRAN compilation systems; and the Architectural Simulator. These tools enable developers to reduce the time needed to reach the growing PowerPC market, ensuring a competitive edge in application performance.
The PowerPC 601 Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) microprocessor, introduced in October 1992, is the first of four initial PowerPC microprocessors that IBM and Motorola will design, produce and market to the industry. The PowerPC microprocessor Family will address a wide range of computing requirements, from embedded control applications, personal communicators and desktop computers, to midrange workstations and servers, to fault-tolerant and supercomputing systems. IBM and Motorola are currently designing the next three PowerPC microprocessors at Somerset, a facility in Austin, Texas, which was dedicated in May 1992.
The PowerPC Tools Catalog is available immediately and can be ordered through either IBM or Motorola. To order the catalog from IBM call, 1-800-426-6477. To order the catalog from Motorola call, 1-800- 441-2447.
Suppliers of items listed in the catalog should be contacted directly for further information about product descriptions, availability, pricing, terms and support.
IBM's Advanced Workstations and Systems business, based in Austin, Texas, designs, develops and manufactures the RISC System/6000 line of workstations and servers, the AIX/6000 operating system and related software products, and graphics devices for the workstation products. Its products are available in the United States through the IBM direct sales force and IBM Business Partners.
IBM's Technology Products is the world's largest microelectronics group. It develops, manufacturers and markets a wide range of integrated microelectronic products and services from semiconductor design and fabrication to complete and fully tested functional assemblies.
Having 1992 worldwide sales exceeding $4.4 billion, Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector is the largest U.S.-based broad line supplier of semiconductors, with a balanced portfolio of more than 50,000 devices. Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of electronic equipment, systems, components and services for global markets.
