IBM AND ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES GROUP TO MIGRATE APOLLO DOMAIN/OS CUSTOMERS TO OPEN SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENTS

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Enabling Technologies Group(B) (ETG), an IBM Industry Application Specialist, today announced a new program to help Apollo Domain/OS(B) users migrate to IBM's RISC System/6000(A) family of workstations and servers.
The Apollo Migration Program is the most comprehensive program of its kind in the industry. It features ETG's ARPUS(B) collection of tools and services to assist organizations moving from proprietary Domain/OS(B) platforms to IBM's AIX/6000(A) standards-based open systems computing environment, while protecting the customer's investment in business critical application software.
"We recognize the requirements of Apollo Domain/OS users for greater system performance and application compatibility," said IBM's Tom Jarosh, Advanced Workstations and AIX Systems director. "Based on specific input from these users, IBM and ETG will provide a focused migration program to assist them in making this transition."
The range of services is designed to fit a variety of environments to meet individual customer needs and desired level of participation-- from a turnkey migration program to the option of selecting various migration tools and consulting services. The IBM/ETG approach includes assistance during the pre-migration stage as well as support during the move for both users and administrators.
"IBM and ETG will work with customers to fully understand their business, migration objectives and priorities before beginning the migration process," said Terry Longo, technical program manager at ETG in Amherst, N.H. "Our specialized software migration tools and services are available to make the transition as smooth and cost effective as possible, with minimal impact to the customer."
One focus area for IBM and ETG is the Domain/OS customer who uses Mentor Graphics' electronic design automation tools. With over 15,000 installations in the U.S. running EDA software, this program offers users an opportunity to move to the latest version of Mentor Graphics' Idea Station(B), Board Station(B) and other products running on a high- performance RISC System/6000 workstation. End users benefit from significant performance gains while retaining many functional and ease of use characteristics of their Domain/OS-based applications.
"The combination of Mentor Graphics' software and the IBM/ETG program is a great migration solution for our customers," said Berkeley Merchant, vice president, Mentor Graphics Corporation. "Our customers will benefit from ETG's sophisticated tools to move their applications to IBM's powerful RISC System/6000 platform."
With the RISC System/6000 and the IBM POWER Architecture(A), Apollo Domain/OS customers get a superscalar technology that gives them a range of price, feature and performance options to handle the most complex applications. IBM's standards-based implementation of the UNIX operating system, AIX/6000, complies with the Open Software Foundation(B) Applications Environment Specification and offers ease of use and functional benefits that make it an industrial strength UNIX(B) operating system. The RISC System/6000 features flexible memory, disk and graphics options as well.
IBM's Advanced Workstations and Systems (AWS) business, based in Austin, Texas, designs, develops and manufactures the RISC System/6000 line of workstations and servers, the AIX/6000 operating system and related software products, and graphics devices for the workstation products. AWS is also co-developer of the next-generation PowerPC(A) RISC microprocessor family.
