IBM, THE GREATER BALTIMORE COMMITTEE, AND THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES HONOR STUDENTS AS THE IBM STUDENT PENNANT RACE BEGINS ITS EIGHTH SEASON

BALTIMORE, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- For the eighth consecutive year, IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Major League Baseball are teaming up to help keep kids in school.
Through the IBM Student Pennant Race, IBM, the Greater Baltimore Committee, and the Orioles will recognize 800 area students for demonstrating positive attitudes toward school and their education on Tuesday, June 8. Those selected seventh graders will be joined by an adult guest of each person's choosing courtesy of the IBM/Orioles Student Pennant Race program.
Some 19,000 students in the United States and Canada have been selected to participate by their teachers this year. The total number of students who have personally been singled out for participation in the event since it began will climb to more than 180,000 by the end of 1993.
"The IBM Student Pennant Race has two specific goals," said Jim Sellinger, general manager of the Maryland Trading Area. "The first is to provide young people with an incentive to work hard and stay in school. The second is to let them know that their efforts have not gone unnoticed. This program is our way of saying `keep your positive attitudes,' and letting the student know that the people in their community appreciate their efforts to stay in school."
Each honoree will receive a personal letter of congratulations from Cal Ripken Jr. and an invitation to a pre-game rally, picnic and a major league game.
On the day of the event, the honorees will receive a player photo, baseball cap and other souvenirs. The pep rally includes appearances by Roland Hemond, plus educators and IBM representatives.
After the picnic all 1,500 guests will depart for the stadium and the game between the Orioles and Athletics. One young person will be selected to throw out the honorary first pitch.
