IBM, N.J. BLUE CROSS - BLUE SHIELD FORM
 ALLIANCE FOR HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey, Inc. (BCBSNJ), today announced a technology alliance that is designed to bring advanced, cost-effective health care information systems to New Jersey.
The newly formed alliance, which is composed of IBM; Integrated Systems Solution Corp. (ISSC), a wholly owned IBM subsidiary; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey; and Policy Management Systems Solutions Corp. (PMSC), an IBM Business Partner; plans to provide one of the most extensive managed health care information systems in the nation.
Working together, the companies will supply a broad range of technologies and services that will allow doctors and hospitals to exchange information electronically. This will help ensure higher quality and more cost-effective health care through such technologies as document imaging, electronic claims submissions, and the integration of currently separate databases.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield subscribers should benefit from improved claims processing and customer service. In addition, the large-scale integration of data will allow Blue Cross and Blue Shield around the state to target preventive care needs.
"Our goal is to be the leader in managed health care," said John J. Petillo, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey. "This alliance will apply the most advanced technology available to address critical issues facing the American health care industry."
"We're looking forward to bringing together the resources to address one of the most important areas of concern in America today, the provision of quality and efficient health care services through a broad range of technology products," said Ed Archer, vice president, systems solutions, ISSC.
Services to be provided by the alliance include:
-- advanced managed health care systems
-- installation of image processing workstations,
high-speed scanners and optical storage jukeboxes
 for claims processing
-- a system to allow customers online access to enrollment
 data
-- online viewing of documents previously available
 only on microfilm
-- software and networking capabilities to
 electronically capture over three million
 claims, currently submitted on paper,
 per year
-- electronic mail and calendaring for faster
 information-sharing among Blue Cross-Blue Shield
 personnel
Representatives from each company will participate in managing the alliance.
ISSC and BCBSNJ will have joint responsibility for software application development. BCBSNJ currently uses PMSC's claims adjudication system and will now develop and integrate new capabilities such as managed care and interactive enrollment and claims processing.
