IBEW LOCAL 2100 RATIFIES THREE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH LG&E, COMPANY SAYS
LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 2100 today ratified a three-year contract with Louisville Gas and Electric Co. (NYSE: LGE) (LG&E) that calls for a general wage increase of 3.5 percent during each of the first two years of the contract and a lump-sum payment in the third year, LG&E announced. The contract becomes effective in November 1992.
The parties entered into early negotiations and utilized a mutual-gains bargaining process. This cooperative process proved helpful in problem solving and contributed to the success of these negotiations.
Stephen R. Wood, senior vice president and chief administrative officer of Louisville Gas and Electric Co., said, "We believe the cooperation displayed during the bargaining sessions is the type of mutual effort necessary between the union and the company to make us all competitive in this decade and beyond."
William Noyes, president of IBEW Local 2100, said, "This contract represents a win-win for both parties. Our members will receive improved wages and benefits, while the company has increased flexibility to reassign employees."
Changes in the new contract reflect efforts by LG&E and the union to give the company the flexibility to reassign employees where their services are of most value, thereby providing an additional measure of job security to the union members. Also, the new contract provides union members with increases in wages and benefits.
Some major changes in the contract are:
-- Wages - The contract calls for general wage increases of 3.5 percent during the first and second years of the contract, and a general lump-sum payment of $1,500 in the third year of the contract.
-- Other benefits - Other changes in benefits for union employees include a pretax savings plan with company contributions, additional health-care options, fully paid life insurance and improvements in disability benefits. Also, union employees who are 55 years of age or have 35 years of service will be offered a one-time, voluntary opportunity to retire early.
This contract reflects the company's efforts to push decision making to the lowest possible levels as well as both parties' desire to cooperate through the use of employee and union involvement.
Examples include streamlining the grievance procedure so problems are resolved at the lowest level; implementing a new process so employees and supervisors can work together to recommend shift changes; developing a volunteer list of employees who are willing to work overtime; and establishing joint task forces to monitor medical costs and develop a gain-sharing program.
