 IBAA/STATE GROUPS LAUNCH GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN
 TO FIGHT REGULATORY BURDEN
WASHINGTON, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- At a special meeting in St. Louis, the leadership of the Independent Bankers Association of America (IBAA) and the State Independent Banking Associations (SIBA) decided to launch a grassroots campaign in support of President Bush's Credit Availability and Regulatory Relief Act of 1992 (CARRA).
The community banking leadership noted that the oppressive regulatory burden is adversely affecting credit availability and community bankers' ability to continue to serve their communities and their customers. Together, the IBAA and the SIBAs will launch a grass roots campaign to carry the "Reduce Regulatory Burden Now" message to the Congress.
"Regulatory relief translates into jobs on Main Street," said Bob Hawkins, president of IBAA and chairman of the Southern Commercial Bank, St. Louis. "Our communities and our customers have a major stake in this issue, as we do. This is our Independence Day message."
The IBAA briefed top White House and Treasury staff on this initiative on Tuesday morning.
The IBAA is the only national trade association that exclusively represents the interests of the nation's community banks.
