IAM VICE PRESIDENT ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING ACTION
 TO END RAIL LOCKOUT/STRIKE
WASHINGTON, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- International Association of Machinists Vice President John F. Peterpaul issued the following statement regarding Congress' and President Bush's action to end the rail lockout/strike:
Workers have one basic right in any democracy -- the right to withhold their labor when management does not negotiate fairly. Last night, Congress and President Bush took away that right.
If Congress were to have taken any action last night to protect the public, it should have forced the 40 freight carriers who caused the problem back to work and allowed us to keep our legal right to strike CSX-T. The IAM is opposed to binding arbitration because it limits our ability and our right to represent our members and negotiate a fair contract.
This is an issue of fairness. We participated for four and a half years in the charade the carriers called negotiations. Our members did not get one raise, while the carriers racked up record profits. Fed up, the IAM struck one carrier, CSX-T, to persuade the carriers to negotiate in good faith. We chose CSX-T to have a minimum impact on the traveling public and on industry's use of freight rail.
The arrogant rail carriers created a national crisis where none existed, to blackmail Congress. They showed contempt for their workers and the entire public when they shut down 40 freight carriers nation wide. In effect, the railroad barons declared a strike on America with complete disregard for the traveling public, shippers, and the economy of our nation.
It's a sad day for American workers when their elected government becomes the instrument of powerful rail bosses.
