I love shopping in New York; Music.

Byline: Andy Coleman

URBAN star McLean has a busy summer planned, including appearances at the Glastonbury and Midland Music festivals, a gig at Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall on Sunday and the release of his second single, Falling In Love. He's currently in New York where we caught up with him for a chat.

Why are you in New York? I am in the studio with a couple of producers working on some new material. It's really exciting as working in the US is very different from the UK and UK-based producers. It's nice to have variation when you work.

I love the city. It reminds me a lot of London as it's really busy and fast paced. I particularly like the shopping... for trainers!

Are you managing to follow the World Cup? Yes and no. I have seen the England matches but only some of the other teams. England just needs to be positive, we are a good team and have to keep the belief. Argentina and Brazil are playing well, I would watch out for those two.

Your brother Aaron is a footballer with Peterborough. Why did you choose music while he chose football? I guess the choice was based on talent more than anything else! I can kick a ball around, in fact I recently played at Wembley in a charity football match and I wasn't that bad! But for profession music has always been my passion and football a hobby. It's the other way around for my brother. Plus he needs a couple more singing lessons before he changes his day job!

Your cousin, Bitty McLean, was born in Birmingham. Do you have any other Birmingham connections? No but I do love the city and go there often. I have lots of friends there and play there often.

Sunday's show in Wolverhampton features a number of performers. How long will you perform for and how will you fill in the time when you're not on stage? It's for Flavour Magazine and also on bill are Tinie Tempah, Wiley and Devlin so it should be a great show. I am performing for 15 minutes, so relatively short, but I will perform my singles and something special for the fans. When I am not on stage I will be with the other artists probably hanging out.

You're also performing at the Midland Music Festival in Tamworth on July 18. Anyone on that bill you're looking forward to seeing and why? Not one person in particular as its such a great line up. I am looking forward to seeing everyone. It will be nice to see Chipmunk and Saturdays as I really like their music.

Any nerves about playing Glastonbury? Some, but mainly just really excited about playing there. It will be my first performance there so there is an aspect of pressure but no more than other gigs. I always try and give my best from the smallest show I do to the big festival dates and every fan is important to me. Given the history of Glastonbury and the people that have played and are playing this year, it's just great to be a part of it and hope those that come to the East Dance Tent to see me play have a great time.

The Finally In Love video sees you taking the role of an astronaut. Has it made you want to go into space? Ha ha.. yes, why not! I should be the first artist to do a gig on the moon! The set was very convincing and the video team were excellent, but I am quite happy on planet Earth!

What are your interests outside music? I love playing computer games.
