I hide biscuits under bags of salad in my trolley at the supermarket; TV's best actual doctor, 38, talks embarrassing illnesses, not being allowed to get high on drugs and why Lee Ryan is a genius.

Byline: DR CHRISTIAN JESSEN

Lee Ryan, Duncan James and Angela Griffin are great fun. This was at Elton John's Winter Ball - I don't know why I was invited, to be honest. There were huge names there. James Haskell (far right) spent the night trying to chat up Keira Knightley. Lee is a secret genius. He's doing a film script. I can't deny the bad boy side of him but the talented side is about to take everyone by surprise.

Live TV is terrifying but such a buzz. This was Stand Up To Cancer, a five-hour telethon to raise money for Cancer Research. It is such hard work but so worth it. The lads from The Last Leg promised to strip off if we raised a certain amount of money. Alan Carr looks like he's not too sure about what's going on. He and Davina McCall are wonderful to work with and, believe me, I've worked with some stars who are so difficult and unpleasant.

This shows how much the average Brit consumes over BBQ season.

I had to half-eat the burgers and they'd been out so long on display it was gross. I'm not that strict about my diet. I exercise a lot so I don't punish myself. I couldn't dream of a meal without a pudding. When I do my supermarket shop, people are always peeping in my trolley so I hide biscuits under bags of salad.

Oh, that puppy was so sweet. We took a real shine to each other. This is the Battersea Dogs Home ball and it's a heartbreaker. I'm a complete softie, I want to take all the dogs home. Some mean people said, "The doctor should be more aware of hygiene." I thought, 'Take a hike'. I have a little dog called Bruno, a miniature pinscher. He isn't rescue but my next dog certainly will be. Bruno is a pampered pooch, my other half buys him clothes but I don't object. He even has his own Barbour jacket. He's very spoilt.

Look at that hair. Whenever there's an impression of me they use my old hairstyle, which I haven't had for four years. Wonder if they'd let me have that puppet? I loved being on Newzoids - it's hilarious. It makes my mother roar with laughter and it means I'm recognisable. I can't be offended by it. I got off easy - they could have been much more cruel about me.

2015 Jon Snow freaked out on Drugs Live for C4, bless him. The skunk affected him so much he couldn't get in the body scanner. It was an amazing insight into the effects of drugs. You can imagine how difficult it is to get these shows made because of the law. I wanted to test it myself and was so disappointed when I couldn't. I'm left-handed, and all the testers had to be right-handed to keep everything the same. John was sweet, like a vulnerable dad and didn't enjoy it, but he was terribly polite.

Dame Judi Dench is such a sweetheart. We've been friends for about 10 years. Here we are at a charity gala - we like to go to things together as we have such fun. I sat next to her daughter and we got on like a house on fire. So then I met the rest of the family through her. Judi became a dear friend. It was a bit surreal at first hanging out with such a big star but she's so down to earth. She still gets nervous about everything and says, "I'm absolutely terrified, Christian!" A lot. I find odd when she is so fantastic. I just think, 'Judi, you're being ridiculous'.

Thankfully, I don't think I've got anything more wrong in my life than when it came to Embarrassing Illnesses.

I thought it was a bit dull. It was just haemorrhoids, verrucas and eczema at first. Nothing to get excited about. Then it aired and it was chaos. Everyone loved it. It's great because it's informative but also funny. We know some body parts and conditions are more funny than others. Each series we try to get more and more extreme. I'm still a working doctor and it makes me laugh when people think I'm an actor. I like that people ask me for advice on the tube to work, but please don't take my photo without asking.
