Dear Coleen I'M a girl of 12 and I try to eat the right foods and exercise daily but I feel like I'm not getting anywhere.

All my friends have the perfect body - hipbones, collarbones, thigh gaps - and I'm just the fat kid, even though they say I'm really skinny.

But I know I'm fat and sometimes it makes me not want to eat.

Even worse, I have stubborn pimples that won't go away no matter what I do. I feel so worthless and I cry myself to sleep every night. Please help.

Coleen says YOU'VE got pimples because you're starting to go through puberty and mature into a young woman. A lot of us have pimples into our 20s. My daughter is 14 and is always moaning about spots popping up but it's because her hormones are changing. It's natural, but it won't last for ever.

Ask your mum to help you cover them with a little concealer if you're self-conscious.

What's more worrying for me is that you're talking about the prospect of not eating and going to the gym every day. If you're not careful, you could end up with an eating disorder and, trust me, that won't solve any of your problems, it'll just create a million more.

Why do you want your bones to stick out? What I've noticed recently among young women is that it's cool to have a strong and healthy body and to celebrate your womanly shape, which is a fabulous message. How wonderful to feel strong and confident.

I think you should confide in your mum about how you're feeling - I'm sure she will have battled insecurities herself growing up, so draw on her own experience.
