I DID SEE MY HUSBAND ATTACKING SHAFILEA; Mum changes story.
A MOTHER accused of murdering her daughter after rows over the teenager's lifestyle now claims she saw her husband attack her.
Farzana Ahmed, 49, is on trial with Iftikhar, 52, charged with the killing of their daughter Shafilea.
The 17-year-old's body was found on a river bank in Cumbria about five months after she disappeared.
Mrs Ahmed has always denied murder and yesterday the jury was told of her dramatic change of story.
Judge Mr Justice Roderick Evans said: "That is a significant development in the case and needs thought."
The prosecution claims Shafilea was killed because she shamed the family with her desire to lead a "westernised" lifestyle.
Henry Riding, prosecuting, told Warrington crown court that Mrs Ahmed's latest statement contained an admission that an "incident of violence" towards her daughter did occur - a fact she had denied.
Mrs Ahmed now alleges that she found her husband attacking Shafilea and when she tried to intervene she was "punched with a clenched fist".
She says she went to her other children because she was "scared" and when she went back 20 minutes later Shafilea and Mr Ahmed were gone.
When he returned she claims she asked him where Shafilea was and he responded: "If you care for your dear life and that of your children don't ever ask me this question again."
Mrs Ahmed alleges her husband made further threats to her and her children but that she believed him when he said he had taken Shafilea "somewhere" and that "she was safe".
The couple deny murdering Shafilea at their home in Warrington in 2003.
