A YOUNG Tory activist from the Holme Valley has been caught up in a furore over claims of sexual harassment.

Senior Conservative campaigner Robert Winfield has been accused of behaving inappropriately towards female activists while acting as a party organiser in Leeds. He has been suspended by the party over sexual harassment allegations.

One of the complainants is former Holme Valley Parish councillor Elena Bunbury, from Honley. Ms Bunbury, 21, posted a statement on Twitter at the weekend which claimed she had informed the party about the alleged behaviour last year.

In the statement, she claimed her allegations were not investigated by the party and she was forced to resign from the Yorkshire Conservative Policy Forum.

She did not name Mr Winfield in her statement.

Ms Bunbury said she had been subject to a "witch hunt" for daring to speak out.

Tory HQ has confirmed that Mr Winfield has been suspended, pending an investigation.

Asked if he wanted to respond to his suspension, Mr Winfield told the Daily Mirror: "I don't. Let's see what happens."

It is believed that Mr Winfield denies any wrongdoing.

He is a long-standing member of the party, having been secretary, treasurer and an honorary vicepresident of Leeds City Conservatives.

He was an honorary vice-president of the Yorkshire branch of the party's youth wing, Conservative Future, between 2009 and 2013.

He has also been involved with the Yorkshire Conservative Policy Forum.

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: "We take any allegations of this type incredibly seriously and are investigating this matter in line with our procedures."

Ms Bunbury - who hit the headlines in 2018 when she received sexist abuse when she made pro-Brexit comments on BBC Question Time - declined to comment when approached by the Examiner.
