I'm not surprised I was first masterChef booted off I don't even Cooke; GARY'S DESSERT LETS HIM DOWN.

APRES Match star Gary Cooke was the first contestant to be booted off Celebrity Masterchef Ireland last night.

But the comedian admitted yesterday he had no chance as his wife Lorraine does all the cooking at home.

He revealed: "Dylan told me that my dessert looked like something that had fallen off a roof. How he'd know what something like that would look like, I'm not too sure." But the comic took it all good-naturedly and accepted the inevitable.

He said: "I feel fine, I'm not devastated or anything. It was shot a while ago so I've had time to recover. The producers asked us all not to discuss the outcome in advance.

"I don't know if anybody really cares though. I don't cook at all. I told them that, but they still wanted me on. I knew I'd be gone after the first or second episode. But I decided to give it a bash anyhow."

After perusing a Delia Smith book, brave Gary tried his hand at salmon fillets in a creme fraiche sauce.

He said: "I also had a pureed vegetable dish with it, which Nick liked. But I felt there was actually too much on the plate myself. For the next task we had to make crepe suzette, but I didn't have a clue. It was pretty much disastrous. They talked me through it, but it just didn't work out.

"I knew then my days were numbered. Was I laughing or taking it seriously? A bit of both really. I had practised the salmon dish at home all right but the dessert really killed me.

"It was supposed to be a Mystery Dish - well, it was really a mystery to me how to make it. Still is."

Gary revealed his wife Lorraine is a "really, really good" cook.

He added: "She didn't really care about me going on the show. Her only advice to me was to try to keep things simple."

Funnyman Gary, renowned for his accurate mimicking of controversial sports pundit Eamon Dunphy, expects "a bit of a slagging " from pals, family and people in the street after last night's show.

But he said: "To tell you the truth I was actually relieved when it was all over.

"We did a couple of takes of them telling me I was going home. I pretended to faint in one of them. I didn't need comforting.

"From what I can remember the other contestants were all laughing."

He reckons Kamal Ibrahim will be next for the chop unless he ups his game.

Gary added: "The two of us were definitely the worst of the bunch.

"I think he was shocked that he was kept on. It was either him or me, but my dessert swung it for me.

"Who do I think is going to win? It's hard to tell, but I think that the newsreader Aengus MacGrianna is really in with a chance.

"I enjoyed the show. I got paid all right, but yes, I would have earned a bit more if I'd stayed on for a few more episodes."

The other contestants include Maia Dunphy, David Gillick, Tracy Piggott, Yvonne Keating, and Conor Pope.
