SIR ALEX FERGUSON saw a statue of himself unveiled at Old Trafford - then told his family they must bow to it every Saturday.

And after his wife, Lady Cathy, unveiled the statue, he joked how she and the rest of the family must show due deference by paying homage to it before every game.

Paying tribute to his wife, Sir Alex said: "Someone has to control me and she's the only one who can. But she has promised me that every Saturday morning she's going to bow to the statue!

He hailed the unveiling of the statue at the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand as a proud day for him, but quipped: "Normally people die before they see their statue, so I'm outliving death!" United chief executive David Gill also paid tribute to Lady Cathy, saying: "I'm sure Alex wouldn't have had the success he's had without the support of this remarkable woman.

"From my conversations with Alex I know that, even to this day, she brings a degree of sanity and normality to counter-balance the often mad world of football.

"And I do believe that he's genuinely scared of her!"
