Hymns for Two.
Hymns for Two, arranged by Carol Klose. Hal Leonard Corporation (7777 W. Bluemound Rd., P.O. Box 13819, Milwaukee, WI 53213), 2006. 63 pp. $10.95. Intermediate.Piano teachers looking for intermediate-level sacred duets will find 12 effective settings of traditional favorites in this collection. The difficulty level is consistent throughout the book and between the primo and secondo, with the exception of the 16th-note patterns in the secondo part of "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name." The arranger limits each duet to a manageable length for young students, and only uses major keys up to two sharps and two flats. Melodic motives are skillfully used in imitation, augmentation and to create introductions and endings. Students will enjoy the comfortable feel, well-distributed voicing across the keyboard, tasteful accompaniment patterns, sharing of melody between the pianists, and flesh harmonizations.
