Hybrids taking off.

MORE than 100,000 Europeans have now bought Toyota and Lexus hybrid-powered models, according to figures from Toyota Motor Europe.

But it's taken six years for hybrids to really catch on with more than 50 per cent of Toyota's cumulative European sales total of 101,235 hybrid vehicles achieved in the past 13 months.

Toyota's hybrids were first launched in Europe in 2000 and the Toyota Prius - the world's first mass-produced hybrid vehicle - maintains its position as Toyota's best-selling hybrid, with over 73,000 European sales. The company expects its hybrid sales to reach 44,500 units this year.
