Hunt is on for Wales chef of the year.

PRIZEMONEY totalling pounds 3,000 will be at stake when the best chefs battle it out at Wales'' top cooking contest. The Welsh Culinary Association is encouraging chefs to put their names forward for the biannual National Chef of Wales contest.

The road to the National Chef of Wales title begins in two qualifying heats -Coleg Ystrad Mynach on Friday, November 13 and Deeside College, Connah''s Quay on Friday, November 20.

Judges will select the best four chefs from the heats to compete in the final at the Welsh International Culinary Championships at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru on February 16.

Entry forms and details at welshculinaryassociation. com. A Pembrokeshire butcher has been awarded a coveted regional trophy in the Great Taste Awards.

GwaunValley Meats' Back Bacon beat off competition from Flintshire's Anne's Patisserie's Sticky Chocolate Pudding with Rich Belgian Chocolate Sauce, Llanrwst's Blas Ar Fwyd Cyf's Seville Marmalade and Hawarden Estate Farm Shop's Welsh Black Beef and Beer Pie.

The judging panel included TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson, restaurateur Mark Hix and former Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers, plus Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans.. Autumn is the season for food festivals and this Saturday the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) holds a sustainable food fayre.

Features include a farmers market with local produce, meals and snacks provided by the CAT restaurant team, demonstrations by food producers, pedal powered smoothies, and talks and activities.

Apple expert Ian Sturrock will be encouraging visitors to bring their apples to be identified, and supplement their orchard by purchasing young trees.
