Hungary builds a fence on its border with Serbia as refugee crises increase.

BELGRAD (CyHAN)- As Hungary builds a fence on its border with Serbia and the situation at the border between the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Greece is increasingly precarious, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is calling on the EU to open legal channels to allow vulnerable people to find protection in Europe.

Refugees in Serbia on their way to Hungry fear the tighter measures and say they wouldn't have fled home had they not been forced to do it by the war.

The numbers have put pressure on Serbia and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, leading to tighter border controls.

Every day, thousands of refugees and migrants are crossing the from FYRoM into Serbia. Most have walked for days to reach here.

Free buses take those who do make it to the nearest town where they can be registered.

From here they move to Serbia's capital Belgrade and sleep in parks in the hope of crossing into Hungary next.

SOUNDBITE (English) Melita Sunjic, UNHCR:

"We see more and more families with children. We see them taking their old parents with them in wheelchairs, these people are coming mostly from refugee producing countries like Syria."

Ismail from Deir al-Zoor in Syria is here alone. His family was torn apart by the war.

He comes to Europe desperately seeking safety.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ismail, Syrian Refugee: "I am coming to Europe because I am fleeing the war. We are fleeing war, terrorism and poverty. Neighbouring countries wouldn't take us in or offer anything. I was in Lebanon and I was kicked out because my residency expired, I paid a fine to leave the country. I tell countries that if you can help us in your countries please do, if not then open the borders so we can reach a country that can actually help."

Sofija is in her final year of medical school, but she finds time to spend few hours here daily.

She and a dozen others are part of a network, funded by UNHCR that aims to offer advice and help ease the burden of refugees passing by.

But the help offered is temporary and aid agencies are calling for a long-term solution.

SOUNDBITE (English) Hans Freidrich Schodder, UNHCR:

"We have to see how we can assist Europe in developing it's asylum system in such a way that refugees do not need to cross borders in the heart of Europe irregularly. That there is a way for them to move legally, that they don't have to rely on the services of smugglers and criminals to reach safety."

After Belgrade, many continue their journey north to Hungry. But a closed border means for now they will stay in this site.

They wait and hope for open roads at the border - and open hearts in Europe.
